I've run 3 partitions on a single drive and actually gained some performance (tho fairly small) by selecting where to put each partition physically on the drive (outer edge vs. innermost edge.

You gain some degree of sequential read speed for the data on the outer tracks of the drive, but you still hurt seek times for the whole drive.

Yes, but that's what I'm trying to say: By organizing the HDD like this only the commonly accessed files are on the fastest part...all the other stuff like game patches, downloads, random other files, etc. are placed "out of the way" towards the middle. So if you're playing a game, it doesn't need to search the whole HDD for the textures or whatever, they're all together on the same partition in the same 'place' on the HDD.

The only partition I ever creat now is for the OS and that is 100GB of a 1TB HDD. I have a total of 3 1TB HDDs and the other two have no partitions. If you have STEAM you don't want to partition either because it installs all games to the same partition.

How do you create a partition on the outer edges of the platters? I'm wondering even if you could control where the partition is created, if you would see a difference on a modern 1Tb 7200rpm 32Mb cache drive anyway. With two 500Gb platters and a head on each side of the platter, that's only four heads seeking and writing. Now they have 640Gb platters. I guess before long we will see 1Tb platters.
