A Spitfire XVIII crashed today at a small airfield in Tynset here in Norway. It was going to do a display at an airshow that was to be held there tomorrow. But it crashed during landing today, flipped over on its back, and the pilot died frown I never really knew him, but I talked to him a couple of times at Kjeller, the airfield I fly from, when the Spitfire was there, so we knew each other by sight. He used to fly for SAS, but retired. He was in his 70s, and his name was Bertil Gerhardt. So sad, both for the Spitfire, and most of all for the pilot. He was a really nice guy.

RIP!

This is the actual Spit in happier times:

Sad as it is, hope they can fix the bird. Kinda like a tribute to the pilot...

Though, I must say I can only think of 2 or 3 ways that would be better to make a final exit that in a warbird.

Tragic. frown

Any initial reasons for the crash since the Spit is slightly off the runway? At 70 years old, one can assume the pilot had clocked many hours on high perf machine.

Dunno, but it might seem like the old Spitfire devils; narrow undercarriage and 2250hp reared their ugly heads.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Here you can see the plane upright again:

The crash investigators might come with a preliminary comment today, the full report is months away.

Well the problem is easy enough to see. When landing you are supposed to have the wheels the other way.

Really - a sad thing . Terrible loss of a pilot and much damage to an irreplacable machine.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

I'm glad to see that the plane seems to have suffered only repairable damage.
