Using K or D models?

D models use an IR camera to track and lock targets and are more effective at range.

K models use an optical B/W camera and suffer from reduced range.

If the link above doesn't help (it should) make sure you have the controls for slewing the seeker head mapped to a HAT switch on your stick as well as the lock button. In a perfect world I like to engage targets from as far out in level flight as possible. That allows me to concentrate on target acquisition for a moment while the A/C is in Alt. AP mode. Another tip is that the lock button also can stabilize the seeking on the maverick. If you point the seeker at the ground it will stabilize and stop jumping around due to the A/C's movement. Hope this helps!

I've read on other forums that the logic for locking up a target with a Mav in FC2 has changed. They have made it more difficult to lock up smaller vehicles, you have to get closer.

Well that would ring true for K models with the limited range. The only problems I have with D model mavs is with certain Strela models and not acquiring a lock.

That lines up with what I've read on other Forums about smaller vehicles (Strela was specifically mentioned) being harder to lock up with D Mav's. Makes it more dangerous to knock out the Strela's.

If that was the supposed change with the Mav’s then ED missed target completely. The Ka-50 can easily take out Strelas so then they should make the change there as well then? In my opinion you don’t “fix” weapon capabilities in a Study SIM in that way. ED has had some serious bad recommendations from someone in this case. The Strela can be placed in pairs and supported by SAM’s to make them more difficult to take out. That would teach players situation awareness on the battlefield AND the weapon would work the way it should and not fool any newcomer to the SIM who have some weapons experience. The fact that ED changes the SIM in this way make me think twice about the upcoming DCS A-10C and if I should recommend that SIM to my friends.

The worst part about this is I think the fact that ED have decided to NOT make more patches and updates to FC2. That is a sad sad story

It's not a change AFAIK but a bug, additionally I've only experienced this issue with a particular model of Strelas, nothing else. ED can't make everyone happy but I think they've done a great job with FC2. You can take any software and pick it apart to pieces with things you don't like or bugs. I think ED has done the best job with what their aiming for, and for whatever reason I can't think of any other sim that does it better (with regard to modern simulations, there are no others though).

FC2 was meant to be one last improvement to the LOMAC/FC chapter and a way to merge it with DCS-KA50, I think they achieved those goals overall.

The Strela-10 is the one that usually gives me the most trouble locking it up. If there's anything else close to them the designator wants to jump to that.

To kill the Strela-10 you need to dodge 6 of its missiles and then take it out while it is reloading. Be quick :P
