From what I've read and seen, the game is supposed to span both those decades. I remember seeing a ingame video of your character walking to his neigborhood and it must be VJ day or right at the end of the war because he is wearing service clothing toting a suitcase and there are bombers flying all over the place as though there is a celebration going on.

Heads up! Amazon.co.uk mentions "Vegas DLC", which you get with a pre-order before 27th August 2010. [EDIT] From another source: North American gamers who pre-order at GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy and Wal-Mart.com will get these bonuses:
* Vegas Pack (GameStop): Get a taste of old school Vegas in this new DLC pack from Mafia II. Bring a taste of Vegas to Empire Bay as you cruise through the town in two new cars with smooth handling and timeless lines. Vito shows his Vegas style in two new suits inspired by movies and music of the time. * War Hero Pack (GameStop): The ‘40s wouldn’t be complete without a war hero. Vito plays the role well in the War Hero DLC pack. Drive two military style vehicles and notice the superior handling in all weather conditions. Vito looks sharp in two new military outfits, including fatigues and a dress uniform. * Renegade Pack (Amazon): Show off your inner renegade in this new DLC pack. Start with two new cars, one with the slick styling and tight handling of a small sports coupe and the other with the revved up engine of a ‘50s hot rod. Outfit Vito in two new suits, including leather and lettermen’s jackets to fit his renegade persona. * Greaser Pack (Best Buy): Free access to the in-game downloadable content pack that is all about speed. These two new hot-rod speedsters will win you pink slips every time. Pair them with two new outfits for Vito -- a leather jacket with heavy boots, and a leather racing suit -- and get your engines revving. * $10 Gift Card (Wal-Mart.com): Pre-order Mafia II at Wal-Mart.com and receive a $10 Wal-Mart e-gift card. http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Mafia-II-Collector-s-Edition-Pre-order-DLC-Announced-24805.html

This is going to be a must have title for me. I feel obligated. Why, just a couple of months ago, an old acquaintance of mine was convicted on federal racketeering charges, LOL! I grew up around some real Dueseys. If you want to see Mrs. Sauron get mad quick, bring up some of my old acquaintances. I hesitate to call them friends because she reads the forum and would give me a lecture if I referred to them as friends. She was actually sitting there watching a couple of years ago when one of them was interviewed on national TV and recognized him. She heard all the rationalizing and disinformation. Madame was not impressed. I've never been in trouble with the law in my life, but try telling her that I'm nothing like those guys, or that they never were anything but kind to me. It don't wash, I can tell you. In the Lioness mind, if you know them, you must be like them. I'm under constant suspicion of dire naughtiness here. Yesterday I got a lecture about acting like "a thug from the 'hood" for admiring Cadillacs and dressing too nice. She's somehow blended "The Godfather" with the image she holds of the guys I grew up with, LOL! It would probably help if they'd stop offering me a job everytime they bump into me, and saying "If you ever need anything, come see me!". And if they'd quit teasing her and telling her things like, "Hey! Mafia stands for 'Mother's and Father's Italian Association', it's just a civic group!" And it doesn't help when the old moustache Pete's grab me and hug me when they see me and say, "Richie! I'm-a love you from the bottom of my heart! Where you been?" Things have quieted down and Mrs. Sauron's blood pressure has dropped significantly since moving to Oklahoma. But she still gets mad if you mention the guys back home. "You'll never get me to like crooks!" is the standard line if they happen to come up in conversation. Cheers! Rick...

You made here an offer she couldn't refuse... ...or else she wouldn't be Mrs. Sauron.

Italian-American Group UNICO Takes Issue With Mafia II, Take-Two Responds August 18, 2010
UNICO National, which claims to be the largest Italian American service organization in the United States, has taken a stand against Take-Two Interactive in regards to the portrayal of Italians in Mafia II. Calling it "pile of racist nonsense", UNICO president Andre' DiMino is demanding that Take-Two hold back on releasing the title, which is due to hit retail on August 24th.
Mafia II tells the story of Vito Scaletta, a man from a Sicilian immigrant background who joins a crime family and participates in violent acts. The game features violence, murder, sex and other adult themes, as did the first installment in the Mafia series.
DiMino openly attacked Take-Two in his statement, saying, "Why would [Take Two] foist a game on their targeted audience of young people wherein they will indoctrinate a new generation into directly associating Italians and Italian-Americans with violent, murderous organized crime, to the exclusion of all of the other 'mafias' run by other ethnic and racial groups?" DiMino continued.
...
UNICO National, founded in 1922, claims to be the largest Italian American service organization in America. According to the organization, volunteer members support charitable, educational and community service projects while promoting Italian heritage.
UPDATE: In a statement, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick responded to UNICO:
"Mafia II tells a compelling story about organized crime in America -- a subject that for decades has been featured in movies, television shows and novels. Neither UNICO nor any other organization purporting to represent Italian-Americans has seen or played Mafia II," he wrote.
"At Take-Two, we balance our right to free expression with what we believe is a thoughtful and responsible approach to creating and marketing our products," he continued. "Mafia II is M-rated in accordance with our industry's strict standards. It is specifically not targeted toward young people."
"We will only release a title that meets our standards: as art, as entertainment and as a socially responsible product," Zelnick concluded. "We aim to distinguish creative and compelling story telling that advances artistic expression from subject matter that gratuitously exploits or glorifies violence or stereotypes. I fully and completely stand behind our creative teams and products, including Mafia II."
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/29991...wo_Responds.phpUNICO? What a bunch of goomba's. I guess they needed some attention. Take2 will probably thank them for the free airtime that Mafia 2 got.
