Tomcat Starred in 2 Movies, and was supporting cast in a dozen or so More.

I dont think Hornet starred in a Hollywood Movie yet., was supporting cast in about a Dozen though.

Argument Settled LOL.

I thought about giving the Hornet credit, but it was only in the Opening Sequence until it was shot down, where as the F-14 stars from opening sequence to Credits in a few Titles.

Same with "The Rock" it appeared in a few sequences and in the end before the bombing of the Island, thats a supporting role, its supporting the storyline and the actors. Same with Beind Enemy Lines,

The Only Movie I can think of off the top of my head that had more F-18 Footage was Independence Day, but it was ALL CGI.

Starring F-14:
Top Gun
Final Countdown
Speed and Angels

Supporting Role F-14:
J.A.G.

Starring F-18:

Supporting Role F-18:
Behind Enemy Lines
The Rock
Independence Day
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Freedom Strike
J.A.G.

The Star of Behind Enemy Lines is really the Carrier Group itself smile

Should We Start a New Thread for this convo? so we dont hijack the E-2Ds glory.

No point in keeping it when the SH had already been designed. Just a waste of money, especially since the airframe would have required enough re-design to create a new, very expensive aircraft IMHO.

Quote:
She might not be able to get down in the weeds with a Strike Eagle but, she could do everything else. And with the big screen in the back seat for IR imagery, she was more capable in some respects than the F-15E in medium altitude strike, according to the folks at the Tomcat Sunset forums.

That is rather meaningless. 'In some respects' is not justification for keeping it when it would be inferior 'in all other respects', and besides, with the SH on the way, the USN got it's low level/mid level striker. The tomcat was good at one thing: Long range interception. And that has now been deemed either unnecessary or unwanted, and the SH and F-35 will take over.

As a platform, the F-14 is less survivable than F-18E/F, at least AFAIK.

Tears of the Sun had Hornets providing some important CAS.

Nonsense. The Tomcat was faster, had longer legs and could reach out and touch somebody first.

The SuperHornet was a VERY expensive upgrade of the F/A-18C, an aircraft widely regarded as jack of all trades, master of none. It brought 1 capability that the Tomcat did not, the ability to conduct SEAD strike.

If they had gone as far with the F-14D as they did the F/A-18E, that is the only capability the Tomcat would lack and the F/A-18 would have had no other advantage in effectiveness.
