Really outstanding...fine story continuity, camera work, and editing. THIS is one for the archives.

Gisbod should have been in on the 'Flyboys' and 'Red Baron' movies, his less than 8 minutes of video puts both to shame. 'Course they were shameful to begin with, but someone with his talent might have kept them from being the pieces of crap they are...

Well said gunloon, I think we have a spielburg here in the making. Just goes to show both what the engine is capable of and a talented individual

Funny I just watched this a short time ago on the History channel "Dog Fight"

Not only did the graphics, but the presentation looked far superior in this clip.

Excellent work.

Yeah, a few years ago, when ROF was still known as KOTS and driven by Gennedich, the History Channel had an episode of "Dogfights" called the "The First Dogfighters". This episode also had Voss's last flight play by play scenarios. I thought it was the best episode of Dogfights. Gisbod's video reminds me of this episode. You can see it here in YouTube:

Part 1/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeOJDvydY8M&feature=related

Part 2/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg8Wa1fMfQE&feature=related

Part 3/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmPbT9UUvkc&feature=related

Part 4/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdLwBwZZsA8&feature=related

Part 5/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qljc_g_CNE4&feature=related

I think part 3 and 4 feature Voss. Check them out.....

Extremely well done!

I've seen many attempts at such a video - but this is the first one that seems to actually fit with the facts. It is already a favourite of mine.

IMHO, the only glaring issue is Voss's ability to escape. The fact that he was fighting multiple enemies with a superior speed meant that at any given time, at least one of his opponents could have gotten into a firing position if he tried to extend away.

In order to evade being fired upon Voss would have had to engage in an evasive turn - which would further bleed energy and prevent escape. The most efficient practice would have been to attempt to make gentle turns inside of the turn radius of the R.A.F. fighters, denying them the ability to line up a prolonged burst.

Using such a strategy it might have been possible to gradually out-climb a single opponent, but with multiple opponents they could have taken turns recovering energy in level flight and preventing Voss from escaping by making runs. The Entente pilots were experienced enough that at least some of them would do this (and are described as doing as much in the video).

Other than that it seems very accurate and very well done. The only additions would be to mention the length of the fight and that W.V. would certainly have expended his ammunition by the end (especially given that all B flight aircraft were damaged and that Hamersley's bird was a write-off).

imaginative and brilliantly executed with such limited resources.
There is an account of Voss' last fight by Rothsay Stuart-Wortley that is interesting.
"We knew them all (German Aces) by sight..By the way they flew....they painted their machines with a medley of gay colours...Voss affected checkers of black and white....
Then of a sudden I espied ...a solitary, lonely Hun...this triplane was a rara avis on the Ypres front." Stuart -Wortley says in his opinion Voss' triplane was fitted with a captured Le Rhone engine
As to the number of planes present, he says, "We took to the air, six Bristol fighters, eight SE5a's, and two flights of Camels",
Then the fight.."Bald headed he went for the SE5a's, guarded though they were by the Bristols from above and the Camels below"...For eight minutes on end he fought them, the whole eight of them while I sat 1000 feet above watching with admiration this display of skill." Describing the fight Stuart -Wortley says "he broke off the fight and darted off the join a flight of Albatri which had appeared upon the scene.....placing himself at the head of this formation, he again wheeled to the attack. But the Albatri proved themselves unworthy of their would-be leader. They followed him to just within range of our machines and then they turned and fled.
The triplane came on alone.."
Hope the account is of interest to those who may not have read it.

Jerryc, yes I haven't read it and it is very interesting.

Does anyone know what altitude the fight took place at?

As someone who doesn't fly ROF - the online issue-. i have nevertheless watched this in great admiration
Both for the video itself and the graphics of the sim.

Superb work.

Pretty amazing isnt it. I think that there has be a bit of desaturation but basically its almost exactly how the game looks and runs.

ROF still (after over a year) gives me goose bumps every now and again, never had that in a sim for so long.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments.. It's late now, so I'll reply to some in a bit more depth tomorrow - but just to let you know - I've deleted the video , but replaced it - there were a few typo errors and bits and pieces that were bugging me - so hopefully it's better now!

Ps Squid.. Could you change the link in your opening post as it's now unavailable?

Thanks

Gisbod

Avimus, all history is suspect when taken from one source only because it is so subjective.
I'll give Stuart-Wortley's take on it. The History Channel talks of a cloud base at 9000 feet.
Stuart-Wortley says."It was a perfect morning.Rarely have I seen the atmosphere so clear. He says "England! From 20000 feet above the earth how lovely and alluring are the white cliffs of Dover." Later he says "I sat 1000 feet above watching with profoundest admiration this display of skill."
Best I can do.
