It's no secret that I like the career missions; they're varied and over all well put together.

It is also no secret that I've long thought that it is just a matter of tweaking to turn them from good to outstanding. No windsock at the aerodrome, too little opposition at the objective, and recon planes without escort.

So I've taken to modifying the missions presented. It makes them more challenging and takes care of some of my nitpicks - as well as being a good way to learn the FMB, as working examples are provided.

Anyhow, my first go:

http://www.darts-page.com/images/Martin/Martin_balloon.zip

Things changed:

Windsock added.
More baddies at objective.
Recons escorted.
Balloon is present from the beginning of the mission so no pop-in.
Wingmen and bad guys get names (even though I don't use icons, I thought it was cool).
Custom skins for Escadrille and named Aces (though one needs the skin pack, linked in the infamous Martin SPAD AAR thread).
Friendly AA gun at bridge where recon flight is.

I'm working on the second, including adding in some stuff at the aerodrome to make it look more lived in.

Hey Dart, I don't have the game yet, should get it tomorrow. Couple questions. Is there some randomness built into these missions?

For example, (this is my big beef about most combat flight sims, in fact "first eagles" is the only one I know of that could do this)...Is it possible to have a mission where the enemy planes are already very close to your own aerodrome when the mission starts ?

Of course this would be really cool if it happened in a random manner, for instance if the distance to enemy planes was quite variable.

Realism is what I'm looking for here, and a feeling that surprises may occur, just like a real war.

thanks.

The stock career missions are kinda-sorta random.

If one reflys a mission, for example, plane types and some "off the plan" encounters will change.

I've seen furballs right off the aerodrome from take-off, fights here and there to and from objectives, etc.

If you want to read too long AAR's of my experiences with the stock missions while you wait for updates to download:

The Nieuport 17 career, mission by mission:

And the continuation in a SPAD:

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2941686/Martin_gets_a_SPAD_RoF_career.html#Post2941686

The storyline stuff with characters is complete fiction - none of that exists in the stock sim - but the missions themselves (and the actions) are faithful.

Great idea - these are the things I also disliked. Will try it ASAP.
So you changed the parameters in the career mod?
I like it too because time acceleration works here better than in the other campaign.
I noticed no flights on high level above 1000 meters until now.
Can you change that too or how could I change that?
thx

One has to open up the missions in the editor and modify them.

It's not that difficult to do, but does take some of the mystery out of what is going to happen.

/Rise of Flight/Data/Missions is where they go. You can also make a new folder under the /Missions and it will recognize it.

For example, I made a folder called /Rise of Flight/data/Missions/Martin for all my "Martin" career missions.
