When creating a new pilot what is the "Region" input used for?

Also I'm having a bad run with creating a mission and half way through the game loading it'll stop and go back to the missions screen, kind of annoying.

One short question:
Will I always have enemy-contact or are there missions without enemies on my autopilot flightpath?
I don't have much flying time and would like to fight every time.
solved

I just shipped version 5.1. As usual, wait for Gremlin's say so before downloading.

This version should help with mission times. I have found that time compression works a bit better. I also STRONGLY recommend turning off scramble missions and MGs.

If you are willing to deal with air starts mission times are significantly shorter. Air start is an option on the config screen which by default is off. Turn it on to skip the ingress process.

What air start does is put you n (also configurable) km away from the target waypoint. All other flights are progressed at a similar rate, so it just skips the inbound flying. Hope this helps.

V5.1
New Features:
- Implemented air start option for shorter missions.
- Improved offensive patrol logic for shorter missions.
Bug Fixes:
- Fixed error that caused extremely long offensive patrols
- Slowed down aircraft cruise speeds to avoid player being left behind.
- Further slowed down take off and climb out cruise speeds.
- Removed extraneous airfields to improve performance.

I have a possible minor bug report: (V 5.0)

I created a new campaign with the DH2, in the RAF at the earliest date available.

I opened up RoF, and selected the newly generated mission, but the the "start mission" button was greyed out. (I do own the DH2, and was logged in to the account properly).

I created new campaigns, then a new missions, using various different names and dates - and in all subsequent times the start mission button was available.

I deleted all the campaigns and missions from the appropriate folders, then made an identical new campaign, and found the start button greyed out again.

Maybe it's related to the generation of the first campaign? Or is there something simple I'm missing? It was a show-stopper until I played around by generating new campaigns and missions.
