Thanks for a great article!
I hope this is the correct place to post my question...

I am unable to get gpl going and think it may be due to some sort of graphics issue. I installed per your article using the gplps installer and also the new rasterizers. No errors.

The gpl splash screen comes up fine, but when trying to create a profile is when things go wrong. Some portions are overwritten by other text, such as Team Info, Options,Best Laps, Replay, etc... And, when I try to enter my name in the First Name field after 1 character it skips to another place on the screen. The character is echoed on another place on the screen. The Tab key doesn't seem to go to the next field. Can't see the mouse cursor, but if I can find the right place on the screen to click on New (for a new profile I think) a popup screen pops up that overwrites other info. It just seems to get worse the more I try to navigate around...

I was going to post a screen shot, but didn't see a way to attach it.

My system is a Q6700 processor running Vista 64 and an ATI Radeon 5850.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I was looking forward to trying the Targa Florio. smile

Cheers...

Hi dratpons,

I've not encountered that specific problem yet, but there are some known issues and workarounds concerning Vista.

User Account Control (UAC)
Vista requires you run in standard user privileges mode instead of as administrator with full administrative rights which keeps you from doing some operations like adding GEM and other utilities. So disable UAC in Vista to run GPL:

Go to "control panel" > "user account", select your User account.
Now disable "User account control"

Vista tells you that isn't good for pc protection... but with this enabled you can't install or un-install some applications..

Menu screens not visible
There have been a couple of reports that the pbf files that make up the background images of the menus can't be seen when starting up GPL. It appears that this only happens when anti aliasing is enabled, so try running GPL with AA off. A solution for this hasn't been found yet, but it sounds like a graphics driver issue.

Don't know if that relates to or resolves your problems but I'll ask around if someone has other suggestions.

Jens,

Woohoo! You're a genius!! :))

I already had uac turned off, but I set AA & AF to "Application Controlled" in the ATI Catalyst Control Center. Don't know if AF makes a difference yet, but it's looking like the real thing now. Still have some configuration to do, but I'm dancing with joy. Once I get the rest of the installation procedure completed the next stop is the Targa Florio. smile

Thanks much!

I'm a GPL newbie but I just ordered it off of Amazon and will be using this article to install it after my Win7 update! Thanks!

Followed this guide and had GPL up and running at 60 FPS in no time (well, an hour or so, but still). I canīt get over how good it looks, and how good the gameplay is, after all these years! Nothing quite compares to taking a Ferrari for a spin around Monza:o) Thank you very much!
