Hi all,

I have a cruel dilemma that haunts my dream !

What sim do I have to choose ?

Over Flanders Fields or Rise of Flight ?

I am a board/wargamer fond of WW1 (especially WW1 machines). I have a Microsoft Sidewinder 2 Precision. I won't play on my computer again and again, but I'd be very happy to find a great WW1 sim.

Obviously, I hesitate between OFF et RoF. Could someone help my poor soul to find peace ?

Thanks a lot.

ArgonV has asked the key question - 'your system specs will (in the broad strokes) determine what you can run. I'm a board/miniatures wargamer also.

The other question is how much time you're willing to invest for the experience?

Hi,

thank your for your kind answers.

System specs as follows:
Intel Dual Core 2 E8400 CPU @ 3Ghz
Memory 2GB Ballistix
NVidia Geforce GTX 260 896Mb
Windows Xp 32 bits
- I tried to install a software to give you more precisions about my system, but it didn't work ! -

How much time to invest ? Well, not 24H a day. I have to spend (waste?) a lot of time to design a wargame so... 1 or 2 hours a week (maybe more)

Thanks

If your PC will handle it, Rise of Flight is the best choice.

Actually, OFF Beyond Heaven and Hell (Phase 3) is the superior choice. You get so much more for the money.

Thank you for your answers but it'd be great if you'd explain the reasons of your choice.

Over Flanders Fields: Beyond Heaven and Hell is an add-on to Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim 3. It's got many aircraft from the begining of the war to the late war period and a really good single player campaign. The graphics are very good as well. You have to own Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim 3 however.

Rise of Flight has the most realistic flight model and damage model I've seen in a sim, period. The graphics are also amazing. However the plane set right now is limited (But ever expanding) and the single player campaign has some bugs. Multiplayer is really fun though. You need one beefy system to run it right.

I have carefully read the review of both games and it is very difficult to choose between them.

I own CFS3 and I won't play in multi.

I tried RoF (demo). It is very beautiful indeed.

OFF dynamic campaign seems very attractive, but you say that RoF flight model is better. I fear that RoF is too difficult to fly for a newbie like me.

Is it true that we can see the trenches and the soldiers figthing in OFF ?

It is very too bad we cannot try OFF.

Each have pros and cons !! Dilemma I said !

Hi Arnauld,

I think it's worth considering both, particularly if your rig can handle it - I can't tell from what you posted.

I tried ROF on my dual core setup, and it was pretty horrible, so I'll be waiting until I have a very chunky quad core before I buy it. By then, I hope, the campaign will be up to the standard of OFF (or RB3D).

I do own OFF, and I can tell you that it is deeply addictive, particularly if you like the early (1916-17) period that ROF doesn't yet cover. OFF P4 (phase 4 - it's currently on its third iteration) is due at some point in the future, although the devs are keeping the release date close to their chests. I would recommend a scoot over to Combatace site to check out what's going on there. Also, you can do a lot worse than looking at the many Youtube vids that show footage from both ROF and OFF.

Finally, it would be most remiss of me not to mention ArgonV's excellent - and free - WWI version of Screaming Demons Over Europe and First Eagles 2, both of which I've played and enjoyed to some degree. And, as an addendum, at some point, Canvas Knights - the WWI mod for IL2 (I think? Please someone correct me if I'm wrong) - will be out, which will add yet another choice for you.

Best of luck in deciding!

Cheers,
Simon
