I was so glad when that was over - that last hour was so painful
The day had started badly in practice so I wasn't hopeful for the race. Like Rob, I love driving the Ring but for me, whatever the car I can't drive it quickly enough. I'd done a 7:18 in practice (Q trim) and was hoping I might be able to push a 17 maybe in qualy. Aborted my first run after going off on the GP section and that kind of set the scene for me. Impressive time from Ahmad
At the green I'd got a slightly better jump than the guys ahead and was closing (albeit not within reach) as we approached the braking. The guys in front were a little staggered in lines and I struggling to see my braking mark. Not wanting to risk hitting the guys in front in case they tangled I braked early. Unfortunately Joe hit me from behind - my fault as much as yours Joe - just one of those. Unfortunately for a moment I was beached on one of those cones but then fortunately someone else tapped (hit) me and I think knocked me off.
The car was a little beaten up after that but the damage was probably only worth about 4-5 secs although this got worse as the race progressed. At later stages I couldn't seem to lap any faster than 7:37. I'd only practiced with Hard tyres amd used one set for the whole race. There didn't seem to be any drop off in performance come the end of the race.
Had a good battle with Joe (at a distance) for much of the race - a bit unfortunate that we were sharing a pit which I think cost him a few seconds each time in. On a couple of occasions I pulled out quite a gap but for one reason or other would I have given it all away come the end of the stint. One of the occasions I'd come up on Wrecking Crew and Pumbaa who'd tangled at the exit of the Carousel. I thought Pumbaa was in danger of getting stuck on the kerb so I hung around for a few seconds while he righted himself. Then LC and Daren came bearing down on us and it all got a little tight there for a while.
That GT2 battle looked great - I made a real effort every time through to try not to disturb them too much - hope I didn't spoil anything guys.
Not sure about that penultimate stint Joe - I think mostly I was struggling to focus and concentrate by that point and I was just running a bit slower. Every now and then I'd wake myself up and for the final stint I put on a bit of a push again. By then though my car was very down on top speed and not handling great either.
A good race but not a personal performance I'll remember fondly. Looking forward to Laguna and a new challenge in GT1
Thanks for hosting Doug and to all those who raced
Grats to all winners and finishers
