I'm thinking of investigating the latest incarnation of Panzer Elite, which I understand to be PE-X. However, I have heard rumors that it (either PE or PE-X?) does not work with Vista. Does it?

If it does, what does PE-X add to the experience? What are the biggest improvements?

That's good to hear. (I have Vista 32-bit.)

Were any special installation tricks (besides the usual avoiding the "Program Files" folder) necessary? And have you tried PE-X with it?

Update:

I picked up PE(SE) for about $2.50 at GamersGate. I went to PEDG and downloaded PE3 and the associated scenarios and other files.

I can play U.S. and Brit scenarios fine. However, when I hit "GO" from the briefing map for German or Soviet scenarios the game crashes and tells me that the Menu program has stopped working.

Has anyone seen this before?

This is under Vista 32-bit.

PE3 is BobR's project to use the peX game engine. If you have issues with pe3, you musk ask BobR. If you have issues with the peX engine, then ask at http://pedg.yuku.com/. There is a history between Bob and I that is a permenant rift.

I have found it difficult to support peX at GOG, so I have abandoned PE support at GOG.

We lost Wolf and we lost the TvT forum where most of the PE modders hashed out an agreed time line of the PE history. Ost won the propaganda war of the great creators from the PE wars.

I respect what the creators of OstPak made with there modder ability of that time, but they are not PP2, nor PEDG, nor P.E.D.G nor, PE-X. Ostpak are great scenerio creators and great 3D model creators, but little else ( my opinion ).

Ost, if you have an objection, then speak up. At it's end, we all seemed to agree on the TvT forum. Lets hash it out again if need be.

I think I found the fix. It all runs perfectly if I set "mymenu" and "gameproject" apps (in the PE main folder) to Win98 compatibility mode. I've been happily playing since.

Thanks to all who've made the changes and kept this classic alive.

GOG does a good thing by keeping old games publicly avalible, but tonight I have returned from there forum after 3 attempts to support PE failed to post. This is the second time I was unable to post a reply to there forum. I find GOG too frustrating to give them free support of PE and PESE.
