I don't know about mods in 4.09. I certainly haven't noticed any....
I'm probably wrong, though. (I play a modless Il2, BTW)

Best thing about mods is ground detail. Only 2 maps in original il2 1946 have same level of detail as modded ones. Flying over unmodded smolensk map that dates to 2001 is not very cool -MODded Smolensk map is much better ( just to give an example)

Well, I'll stand by my advice that one should get the feel for the stock sim before delving into mods.

Then again, I'm pretty agnostic when it comes to them. There's a lot of great content; but one can't troubleshoot properly if there are problems with mods in place (as it might be a sim setting or a mod conflict).

On setting up HOTAS and controls:

My approach was to start out slow, building profiles that match keystrokes a few commands at a time. Programming everything at once was overload for my pea brain. Once I got comfortable with the most used commands and their place on the stick and throttle, I expanded it.

Stab is one of the most vital helper apps made. It's not a mod as such, but a GUI interface to the config file and options that aren't easily understood. Indeed, every time I've tweaked the sim manually to where it won't run for crap, having Stab run repaired my fixes.

Another useful thing for me was the BBQ speechpack:

http://www.darts-page.com/files/bbq_speechpack.zip

It gets placed in the samples/speech directory (back yours up first), and replaces the Russian and German language with accented English. Not a mod - this has been open for replacement for a long time - but it allows for removing the subtitles popping on the screen.

The third is Mat Manager, which replaces the national markings (again, not a mod) with much more subtle and (if one is inclined) historically correct stars, roundels, etc.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.com

Ok So got the Saitek X-52. New problem the cd software says only run on windows xp64 i have vista-64 How did anyone get the stick to work for their game do you configure it with outside soft ware or with in game? also does anyone have recomendations. I havent playd a sim in years as Ive said and never had this many programmable buttons. So dont know where to even begin setting controls.

What do people mean by profiles. are thos premade set ups for game and HOTAS combined? if so does anyone have any recs so I can get a base line and tweak my likeings from there, starting from scratch is alittle overwhelming.

Dont worry about numerous controls;) You really need only the following:

Axis: Pitch, roll, rudder, power

BUttons:
Fire 1/2/3/4, Cowl flaps (for when engine overheats), gear, flaps up/down, wide view/normal view/gun-sight view, ignition.

For carriers you also need tail hook, chocks.

Even on full realism settings (its the only way to play right from the start!!) you can easily get away with completely ignoring the likes of propeller pitch/ mixture and the like..

Happy flying!:)

PS Make sure youre running graphics in "Perfect mode"!

What is the perfect mode?

Also what do you guys recommend for starting. As an old flight simmer (though never for ww2 my old flight sims were all more modern jets), a engineering student, and a RC pilot, I figure I understand fight mechanics decently well. But that doesnt take into a count the fact that I will have to learn how to fly the controller, as Ive never had anything as complicated as this HOTAS.

Do I just try training flights over and over. I'll probably keep il-2 pretty un moddified until I see any reason to. And i would like to start off with full realism. Its just the game is so all incompassing that it, itself is some what overwhelming. I have a soft spot for the f-4u corsair, but am a true ww2 and air combat buff so any campaign or what not wont turn me off. But I want to do it right i guess. As I have very limited free time to do this what would be a good way to ensure im practicing and honing the right skills, to bring my old flight sim instincts back up to speed.

Thanks again guys for all your help. Lol I probably shouldnt have tried to plunge into like 4 different sims all at once. I picked up strike fighters 2: vietnam. And I had been playing sub sims for 2 months before i stumbled back into the relms of the flight sims.

Alot to try to learn.

Try this mini campaign, a classic for all IL2 beginners : STraight from the Farm by Zeus -Cat http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=2147
You might need to register to download, but this site will be very usefull as it has TONS of missions/campaigns/skins and alike.

Perfect mode- if you have decent nvidia card (I ve got 8800) you can change/paste (some of or all) of these settings into your conf.ini file (back it up first - its in il2 1946 directory). Basicly you have to run IL2 in openGL mode (not DirectX), and change a few things in the conf.ini (mostly in [Render_OpenGL] section). Heres my file, just change resolution from my 1440x900 in [Window} section.

Oh, and Corsair is the toughest thing ever to land on a carrier, but a wonderful plane:)
Have fun:)

K im not the most comp savy lol, so I change the window res in the first part to mine and the rest copys in? or are the text in [] for folders?

Can you link me to the mission4today guide, cant seem to find it.

whats open gl. Im sure my comp is beefy enough dont remember the graphics card but it was pretty good got a new comp a year ago, with i7 and some goodies, not top of the line time but not a slouch. It runs most games pretty well.

To change settings you open the conf.ini file with notepad and ... If you have Nvidia card (not Ati) then you can simply replace all the text in your conf.ini file with one above (but change the resolution in window section ), and that should be it- this .ini sets OpenGL and perfect mode. If you have Ati card, then something else might be necessary. The guide mission4today is slightly out of date (pre 4.09m version) http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Knowledge_Base&cat=7 My own conf.ini is already configured with latest stuff however.

EDIT:
I forgot! YOu Also need to go to Nvidia control panel and select il2fb.exe and set antialaising to x4 or more and anisotropy to x8 or more, Vert Sync on. Make sure all settings "override application settings".

Best

Good choice.

Okay, so profiles:

Saitek has a program called the Profile Editor. Basically one can use the stick and throttle as a keyboard emulator, making a button on the joystick or throttle work like a keypress. One can make a unique set of these (a profile) for every sim and game.

For example, the large "E" key on the throttle of my X52pro on the top is programmed to act like the * key on the top left of the number pad. Why? Because I told TeamSpeak that I want that key to be my "press to talk" command. The D button on the throttle is the same as pressing the F12 key, which is the standard command for TIR center. The "launch" button under the flip up lever is programmed to match the bailout command, since I don't want to press it accidentally, but need it RIGHT NOW when I need it. The fourway hat in front of the throttle is actually cockpit zoom, way back zoom, and increase/decrease zoom. It's actually easier to match the keystroke in the profiling software than mucking about with the control menu within the sim for me.

And so on...

Loads of people share profiles, but I always hesitate before I share mine. My brain doesn't work like most folks, and they'd probably just get confused as to why I put stuff where I did. Best is to start slow and program just one or two things, get used to where they are and what they do, and then program one or two more.

I was half successful half not. Things like the "mouse click button" I was able to program as a wheel brakes and in combo with the "shift" pinkie key, so pinkie key+ mouse button on throttle = radiator. Yay success there. But Im trying to make the "mouse wheel" on the front of the throttle function as my elevator trim, then I could use the to rotaries on the throttle as rud and ail trim. and the slider as prop pitch. BUt I cant seem to make that mouse wheel assign to anything, how would people recommend this?

I cant wait to get track IR, As intuitive as it is to use hat buttons for snap views it would be nice to free them for other functions, not as much in IL-2 but in Strike fighters 2 vietnam I would love to manipulate the radar with the hats, but I need them for snap views lol.

Last night I finished the "straight from the farm" and did a few 2 min to action missions. Then switched to Vietnam, cause I had not fired that up since the x-52 got here.

Very happy I got back to flight sims. Just cant wait to iron out the stick programming so its all set, so I can commit to learning what I have set. When you keep making changes to the control layout to see how it works while your trying to learn makes it difficulte to remember the buttons.

lol I have engine ignition and gear and wheel chocks and stuff down at the bottom three toggles on the stick. and I keep screwin the pooch and hitting engine ignition, killin the engine right after takeoff when I try to hit gears. Lol, but once I commit them to memory it should be easier.
