Quote:
Look close. You may be staring at the end of cancer. Those tiny black dots are nanobots delivering a lethal blow to a cancerous cell, effectively killing it. The first trial on humans have been a success, with no side-effects:

It sneaks in, evades the immune system, delivers the siRNA, and the disassembled components exit out.

Those are the words of Mark Davis, head of the research team that created the nanobot anti-cancer army at the California Institute of Technology. According to a study to be published in Nature, Davis' team has discovered a clean, safe way to deliver RNAi sequences to cancerous cells. RNAi (Ribonucleic acid interference) is a technique that attacks specific genes in malign cells, disabling functions inside and killing them. The 70-nanometer attack bots—made with two polymers and a protein that attaches to the cancerous cell's surface—carry a piece of RNA called small-interfering RNA (siRNA), which deactivates the production of a protein, starving the malign cell to death. Once it has delivered its lethal blow, the nanoparticle breaks down into tiny pieces that get eliminated by the body in the urine.

The first step in the creation of the replicators has been taken.

Now seriously, this a major medical breakthrough. The potential for this technology goes far beyond curing cancer.

I wonder how rich you have to be to have your cancer cured? I mean all the people making money off of cancer now aren't gonna just give up that revenue stream without a fight right?

I have often pondered the ideas other have espoused that technology could in effect create two separate races of humans. The wealthy that could afford all the gene therapies to weed out disease and the nano-technology to repair and/or replace dying cells which would give them a life-span unheard of before (in the far future even possibly immortality). While the poor of the world continue to live and die as humans always have. And that the effect of this over time would be two separate species of human. One engineered and one evolved.

Well that'd make an interesting novel.

That's a very distinct possibility. But right now I'm more afraid of the possible uses as bioweapons. Imagine what would happen if a madman with delusions of genetic purity got hold of this technology and used it to kill those that don't fit his notion of racial perfection?

Do some research on eugenics dude...the madmen have been trying for a long time...

Oh gosh, that would be awful. Even worse, what if someone figures out how to use airplanes as weapons?

Cancer? Before long these nanobots, along with advances in genetics research, may well be able to cure that mother of all diseases known as ageing. Kiss your retirement goodbye!

The one thing I'd really be worried about is the unintended consequences resulting when nanojunk passes through the body and ends up in the environment, which is already a serious problem today with regards to medications and hormones.

I've been waiting for this for almost an eternity... now, all I'm waiting for is the official international news that cancer is curable using nanotech.

bot-flu, and the government will have vaccinations ready smile

Seriously, after seeing the effects of chemo first hand, this is very promising.

YES! Now we can all start smoking again!

I'm off to find a list of all the bad stuff you do that gives you cancer ... and doing it.

So basically, you are going to start eating food and living again?

I've seen a similar approach from Australia except that they used specially designed cells to deliver the RNA and some medication to the cells, at least it worked in rats or mice IIRC.
True, a cure for cancer kills the cancer treatment industry, but that would allow these people to focus on other diseases that require treatment as well. When have we ever valued job security over human lives and innovation?
And no, I wouldn't be afraid of nanobots if I already had a bunch of cells that would kill me anyway.

Soon the nanobots that support my immune system will download a new virus definition every morning when I turn on my WLAN. biggrin

The problem with any targeted agents in cance therapy is that you have to selectively target cancer cells without causing collateral damage to healthy cells and tissues. With few exceptions this has been a very difficult obstacle to overcome outside of carefully controled laboratory studies.

So-called cancer stem cells that are now believed to be responsible for tumor recurrence are even more difficult to target.
