Navyfield is quite fun, and free (you can buy improved items and the like, but you can play fairly well without them).

America's Army used to be pretty good. Haven't played it in a while though.

Some friends of mine love Runes of Magic. Basically WoW but free. I've tried both and they seemed the same to me, but I'm not big on the hack/slash stuff and didn't play long.

Thanks. Yeah it seems most "free to play games" also have the option to buy upgrades, I hate that. That's what turned me off of Combat Arms, Crossfire etc.

I tried several games, but while playing was "free", usually you can manage to survive only for some time before being stuck... either the quests become too hard to fulfill without outside help, or you simply get slaughtered by other players "as they pass by" after they've got their "paid" equipment...

I still haven't seen one "free" game where you can play for a long time without paying for something...

Are you talking about games you play online or games that you can download for free? A lot of older games are out there for free now. It all depends on what you are looking for.

If you like racing, Project torque is pretty dang good for a "free" game.

I played Runes of Magic for a few months last year, without spending any (real) money. Had a good time, got to the level 50 cap (it's gone up since then) without getting the feeling of being too badly disadvantaged against the players who did buy in-game items. Okay, my class choices were not very equipment dependent which made a difference.

Eventually you will have to stump up some cash or you will get left behind your peers, and that can get expensive. That for me was the time to quit, but I did get those months of fun gaming for nothing.
