so i freshly installed falcon 4.0 + superpak4 + superpak4.2 and the game ran great!!! I just did a quick TE basic handling to test it out. Afterwards, i installed BMS 2.0 + 4.2 data fix and running from BMS 2.0.exe the UI loads and then instantly crashes to the desktop. "crashlog says access violation". Anyone know what this is caused by? Do i have something set wrong in the bms-config area possibly? Can i revert back to superpak 4.2 by running from that .exe? HELP!

SP and BMS are pretty much outdated now, why don't you try Open Falcon or FreeFalcon? Either way though, sorry, don't know about your problem.

Possible cause of the crash can be anything.
Unfortunately, there's no rolling back or reverting to the pre-patched configuration. Dance with smile.

BTW, what might possibly have led you to dig out the out dated version of the present Open Falcon, I wonder...No need to answer though...

Im running a low end machine, thats why. I re-did the dance last night and all is good. Im pretty sure open falcon and free falcon are to graphically intensive on my machine. The newest versions at least. What about the older ones maybe? And whats so wrong with the superpaks? They run really smooth without the hi-tiles installed on my system. Guess im just an old schooler frown

I remember the other thread in which you were asking which version to get. Admittedly your specs where somewhat low, but I think you should at least try them out, if they don't run then fine, otherwise you might be missing out wink

AF started off from the latest SP then. Therefore it will be safe to say AF is an improved version of SP and is as stable and low end machine friendly as any of today's game of the genre can be.

Personally, I haven't had extensive flight time out of BMS due to its instability with on-line MP environment.

All told, it's your decision and I am not saying SP4 should be in a museum. However, if you can't resist the eye candy stuffs BMS then had, you'd better be prepared to do the Falcon dance any time.

My 2 cents.

Personally I prefered bms2 to AF. AF broke the GBU and never really fixed it in patches its still innacurate.

I like the crash prone FF5. THose crashes get boring quick though. I remember the old days of bms2 as being my happiest Falcon times.

Hi there,

I digged out some info for ya.

Back in the days I did this dance:

F4
1.08
SP4
SP4.2HiRes
payware HiTiles
BMS2.0
BMS2_NoSSE
SP4.2_BMS_Data_V1
Cockpits
BaZT

Note that BMS2_NoSSE patch for systems that don't support SSE.

And there was some info, posted by Ratty back in the days:
Quote:

the various patches came out as follows:
1/Sp4
2/UnofficialSp4.1 <---now redundant was brought out by me to combat some bad bugs.
3/Sp4.1
4/Sp4.1 BMS Data patch <--exclusively for Sp4.1 and BMS ONLY.
5/Sp4.2
6/Sp4.2 BMS Data Patch <--again only for Sp4.2 and BMS.
7/Radar patch for BMS all versions.
8/Sp4.2 OCI one click installer (made by Ktel) also includes MP5-1 exe for better Multiplayer. And also has the MP5-1 fixes.

In an nut shell here are the install instructions for these patches ONLY. Not for BaZT, extra pits or anything NON F4UT rellated.
You will note that stand alone Sp4 is pointless without Sp4.1 ontop of it as Sp4.1 is the bug fixes for Sp4.

Sp4.1
1/Fresh install of Falcon CD
2/Install Language patch if any
3/Install 108US
4/run Sp4 installer
5/run Sp4.1 installer
6/FLY and be free.

Sp4.1 with BMS both versions
1/install Sp4.1 as above
2/install BMS 1.03 OR BMS 2.0
3/Install Sp4.1 BMS data patch
4/Install Radar bug fix.
5/Fly and be free

Sp4.2 is a high res skins and further bug fixes patch.

Sp4.2
1/Fresh install of Falcon CD
2/Install language patch if any
3/Install 108US patch
4/run Sp4 installer
5/run Sp4.2 installer
6/FLY and be free.

Sp4.2 with BMS both versions
1/install Sp4.2 as above
2/install BMS 1.03 OR BMS 2.0
3/Install Sp4.2 BMS data patch
4/Install Radar bug fix.
5/Fly and be free.

Sp4.2 OCI
1/Fresh install of Falcon CD
2/install language patch if any
3/install Sp4.2 OCI
4/Fly and be free.

Sp4.2 OCI installer I dont know much about adding BMS I suggest you look at the sticky at Frugals.

Thats all there basically is to them.

Important things to note is that you can NOT install Sp4.2 over an Sp4.1 install a redance is required.
MAKE SURE you find the latest versions of the BMS data patches and MAKE sure that you Sp4.1 data patch goes with Sp4.1 NOT sp4.2
And ditto for the Sp4.2 one.

Any questions dont hesitate to ask.

cheers

This is the prove that we are trapped by a 10 years old sim. biggrin

So true.
To me there are good memorys with every main patch.

Good times for sure, but here we tend to say "good things will come again",
so I'm awaiting the next main patch with patience.

Can Free Falcon work with Allied Force or are they two separate beasts?

Free Falcon 5.x (FF5) is stand alone. You do not need Allied Force to use FF5.

Well, heck. I don't have the original Microprose Falcon 4.0 anymore.

My bad, FF doesn't need the old disk. Downloaded overnight and installed this morning. Listening to the menu sent chills down my spine. Being a firefighter, I've heard that kind of desperation before. Sweet.

Hopefully the simulation is just as sweet and doesn't have the same graphics glitch that plagued me with AF.

Glitch located and squashed. However the glitch called Windows Vista Home Basic is going to take a little patience as it will be harder to squash.

One thing that still bugs me after I finally got back to flying falcon after 4-5 years without, is that now Im flying AF and I miss some of the "realism" from SP4.2 BMS. or maybe its just the feel of it Im missing?
I also miss the JDAMs more accurate GBUs, I'm still curios if I did carrier ops in SP4.2 or if that was the old FF3?
Anyway OF doesnt run on Win 7. so I cant use it,I tried FF5.3 and it isnt compatible with my touchscreen, and the cockpits it has orginally, well AF is better but then again there are addons for both.
FF 5.5 is it compatible with win 7?

Im also thinking about reinstalling my old SP4.2 just to see if I gloryfied the old days, but then again its questionable if it works on Win 7 or touchscreen at all.
