My PC has been acting a little wonky since trying this.

I ran a scan with AVG anti-virus, AD-Aware, Spybot and MalewareBytes.

The only one to come up with the problem was MalewareBytes.

You all might want to give it a try.

Ran my weekly scan last night with McAfee, no problem was reported.

Mike,

Try MalwareBytes. I've found it to be the best Trojan detector.

Hi Ray,
I wonder if the flakeyness is a result of the d3dwindower just not ...erm... releasing win memory or something like that?
I have experienced some glitches with my computer after testing different things with the windower, but nothing that showed up during my usual scans, and all went away after a reboot.

Still, it pays to be aware and wary these days, thanks for the headsup.
BTW what exactly was the trojan that malwarebytes reported?

I have also noticed that after running the 3d3 windower that i need a reboot to smooth things back down. It's like loss of FPS when i go right back to the net,but a reboot leaves me all good again.

OK Ray, I ran a deep scan with MalwareBytes and it did report D3DWindower as a Trojan and recomended removing it from my system.

Good call, too bad cause it has such promise.

I have read before of some 'false positives' by various AV and malware scanners, often times they are found to be false, though, and I would hope this to be the same.

Of all of them, malwarebytes is the only one to catch anything, which can be read both ways I guess. There are 2 things I can think of that might cause a false report (I know, I'm really hoping here):

a) d3dwindower is a background running utility which means it can get into windows memory space to detect the launch of eaw and to redirect it's workings into a window

b)the 'original' d3dwindower was written by a Japanese guy, and an english speaker has changed the language (font?) that appears on some buttons and controls, perhaps that is an interference??

I know, I know, - I'm just loathe to take 10 steps backward without being really sure, y'know?

I agree- only one "virus detector" has shown a problem.

This version has been out for a while, I have not read of any reports re a Trojan being found in it.
Obviously we need to get this resolved ASAP.

I have just posted an enquiry on the MalwareBytes forum in the False Positives section.

I found this earlier today, well before Ray's last post.

http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/RRIBIH44562544/D3DWINDOWER-ENGLISH.EXE.html

So, I downloaded the free version and installed the prevx.exe (V 3.0) as shown in Ray's link.

When it scanned my PC it found nothing wrong with the D3DWindower.

I'm not convinced either way frown

From their description this seems to be a nasty program with the ability to hide from detection software.

Personally, I avoid these things like the plague.

When in doubt err on the side of caution.

The date of the file is "Monday, ‎6 ‎September ‎2004, ‏‎5:06:18 PM".
By "Googling" I have found no reports of it causing problems. It has been used to run a whole gamut of games, and in view of its age one would have thought that something would have emerged by now. I will at least wait until I hear back from MalwareBytes.

If this very old program would be known as dangerus, every virus scanner would have it included by now.

That's one point of view and you're certainly entitled to it.

Personally I'm extremely cautious about these things so I won't bother with the program.
