Where the ocean meets the sky
Hello,

1. variation
so there i was in my shiny Albatros D.III, circling the balloon and never saw ANY enemy attacking, until the balloon seemingly exploded all by itelf.
Mission failed.

2. variation
so there i was in my shiny Albatros D.III, circling the balloon until i suddenly exploded in mid air a few seconds after the start of the mission.
Mission failed.

3. variation
so there i was etc. etc., maybe a bit frustrated, in my shiny etc. etc., and my engine suddenly died. Was running half throttle, radiator open, landed.
Mission failed.

4th variation
So there i was, meanwhile furious, in my friggin' Albatros D.III, and never saw them coming. Even when the balloon exploded i was not able to see anyone of "them", not even in Ctrl-F2 sight ?? Real stealth for sure, landed alright.
Mission failed.

5th variation
so there i was in this f*ckin' Albatros piece of $h!t, saw a single SPAD XIII, shot it down before it shot down the balloon. Felt very well now, flew in direction to the next aerodrome, engine suddenly died (why, again? no hit, no overheating, what ??), but managed a perfect dead-stick landing in the middle of my aerodrome.
Mission failed.

6th variation.
Did i say how those Albatros planes $uck. Flew around the balloon, spotted SPAD XIII, shot down same, circled for a further 30 minutes around the balloon, no enemy, flew back to aerodrome, perfect landing.
Mission failed.

Why ?
What are the initiated rules of fulfilling this mission ?

Gretings,
Catfish

I fly around at pretty much full throttle, unless diving or in a dogfight.Maybe that would help.I find the Fokker DVII engine dies easily, but the Pfalz is quite sturdy.Engines were not exactly reliable in 1917,so maybe you are handling it wrong?
Maybe the balloon mission is bugged? I have not tried it.
Or,just install Patrick A Wilsons campaign generator and give that a whirl!

The albatros dosn't suck, I like it very much. You just need to apply proper tactics. Dunno about the balloon mission tho..

Where the ocean meets the sky
Hello,
well the above list was written with tongue in cheek, the Albatros does not suck at all - i am better with this crate than with anything else ... not that this means anything lol.
In the Alb. you don't have to control the mixture all the time, just start the engine, open radiator to full, and that's it. No switching on the magnetoes, starter magnet, caring for fuel tank pressure - easy. Just care a bit about overrevving - i am not sure but maybe this might be an issue - will test it in some free fligths.
However in the missions posted above, i seldomly flew with full throttle, and never did a hard dive. Maybe some shrapnel from far away hit the engine (?).

My question was more about if this mission might really be bugged, since regardless the outcome, you (or better me) always seem to lose. And spotting any plane without the visual helps on (which i generally don't use) is "not easy" to say at least. I'd plain say impossible, sometimes they seem to be cloaked.
So it seems no one played this mission before ?

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

try putting the mission on pause about every 30 seconds or so and do a 360 external scan of your aircraft and see if you can't find a speck or two that resembles the e/a ... and get the general sense of direction from which they're coming ...

question would be as to whether or not the supporting ground AA is firing at the time as well.

Have you tried following the plane towing the 'This Way To The Balloon' banner

The Ballon Defense mission objective comes down to preventing any aircraft from shooting at the balloon. A tough task,... especially if you don't see the enemy aircraft. sigh

Circling a balloon doesn't provide much defense, but at least you know the enemy will come to you. Make sure they pay the price for their "victory" over a very soft target (in RoF).

Record it...

I always headed out to the attacker and engaged before they got to the ballon.

Probably overcooled your engine. It seems to happen sometimes.
