"Landscape" in setup option equals jerky gameplay--why?

I just upgraded to a 27 inch LCD monitor and in the process of making sure I had things set up properly, I went into "setup" and managed to ruin the sim---for a while.
I apparently didn't notice that when I originally set up the sim I had NOT checked the "landscape" box. After installing the new monitor I clicked on the "landscape" button and saw that when checked, it showed the sim using the entire screen of the monitor and when unchecked it showed areas of the screen not used. I figured heck, what's the point of having this nice big monitor if you don't use all of the screen.
That was my first mistake. The next mistake was jacking around with the graphics settings in both the sim and my ATI control center. I even changed back to my original monitor and still had the jerky play! That's when I remembered the landscape button and punched it off and of course, that fixed all of my problems.
Now, a question for you experts--what the heck is the "landscape" feature? First off, when I unchecked landscape I did NOT get anything other than total screen usage which is NOT what the little monitor example shows in setup. The monitor I just replaced has a resolution of 1680 X 1050 and the new one is 1920 X 1200 and both of the monitors screens are totally covered with the sim image. What's the deal?

Have you tried the "Fullscreen mode" button in the setup menu under Screen resolution?
Make sure all your Quality setting do not put you over memory?
I have a Samsung 24" running @ 1920 x 1200 and with "Fullscreen mode" button check it covers the full screen. Unchecked I get boarders.

with your new monitor, your graphics card is manipulating about 30% more pixels (1920x1200)-(1680 x1050)/ (1680x1050). maybe this increase is enough to slow your system down.

Oops, sorry-I apparently can't remember what I see on the computer for more than 3 minutes!!!! Yeah, I meant "fullscreen mode" and what's weird is that when I selected fullscreen mode on both of my monitors my gameplay was slow and choppy. When I unclicked fullscreen mode I STILL got a full screen with no borders. My gameplay is totally smooth with 4X AA, 4X AF, everything set on high at 1920 X 1200 and the world is good. I'm curious as to why the fullscreen mode doesn't seem to do anything on my setup except cause slowed gameplay.
I have two ATI 4870's in CrossFire-I wonder if that could have anything to do with it? I also noticed that I don't get the Crossfire emblem in the upper right corner when running ROF so I guess ROF isn't set up to use it?

You shouldn't get a full screen picture without the full screen mode checked. That's weird.

If you set the screen resolution in the ROF graphic settings tab the same as your monitor's native resolution you will get no border (i.e. smaller window) with the fullscreen mode checkbox left unchecked. Conversely, if you set the game resolution smaller than your native screen resolution, then you will get the borders. If you check the fullscreen box, and the game resolution is smaller than the monitor's native resolution but the same aspect ratio, then the image will be resized to fit the screen but at the smaller resolution. Hope I've notjust confused the issue with that

Ahhh, so your gfx card has a bit less to do in window mode. I 've been playing Red Faction Guerrilla quite a bit recently, its a good game but a dodgy console-Pc port. For unknown reasons it runs much better in windowed mode than fullscreen, gets round some sound problems as well.
Generally you seem to get the standard windows bar accross the top of the screen in window mode with the square and X top right for minimise/exit.

It would seem so Mogster. Actually, what Copterdrvr said made me curious and I just did a quick test at 1680 x 1050 (my monitor's native res), in windowed mode with the game res at 1680 x 1050.
Obviously this gave the impression of "fullscreen" as the game filled the whole screen. Using fraps, previously the game seemed to hold steady at 30fps (everything maxed out), although it dropped a bit during very heavy action. However, in windowed mode I got around a ten fps improvement on my machine, although I can't say it will be the same for everyone.
Interestingly, the windows bar you mention doesn't appear in ROF's "windowed" mode.

Hey Rivet, thanks for your response. I should have remembered that-oldtimers disease is a pain in the @ss! I do have all of my games (except for IL2!) set to the native resolution of my desktop at 1920 X 1080 so that's why it isn't windowed.
What I don't understand is why the gameplay got kinda choppy when I did activate fullscreen. I can't see anything different visually between the two settings but it sure effects how ROF plays-on my machine, anyway.
With 4X AA and AF and film-quality smoothness in the gameplay, all I need is a little fan on top of the monitor to get the "wind in the face" effect and I'll never go back to work!!!
Oh yeah, does anyone remember if they said that ROF is set up to benefit from CrossFire? I enabled the function that is supposed to show the Crossfire emblem in the upper right corner of the screen when it's being used and it doesn't show up in ROF. It does in my other games.
