Not sure what's wrong but I'm trying to add textures to the F-18 in FSX. I have Win 7 notepad which works fine adding the info but when I go to save the file, it won't save as a .cfg file. If I type CFG and use "all files" it says its a cfg, but the file type shows text and not cfg.

Never had this problem in XP....

I amuse you have FSX installed to the default Program Files folder, if so then its Win7's UAC stopping you.
Either turn UAC off or copy the cfg to your desktop and edit it there then copy it back allowing it to overwright.

What's UAC? I'm new to windows 7 myself. When trying to change Pacific Fighter's water to perfect mode I couldn't change the config either. I eventually found that I could cut and paste to desktop and then replace like you said.

Didn't know what it meant either, I'll try turning it off tonight.

Sorry guys, I should have explained better.

The best solution though is not to install any games or sims in the program files folders, install them to a separate folder or even better separate drive.

Thanks for the info everyone. Mark, I'm glad you brought up what you just said. I've been browsing around and seeing more than once where folks have said don't install to the default C:/Programs Files (x86) directory.

Can you please expound upon this? Since I recieved my new system, I've been installing everything there because that's what it defaults to. Is there a reason as to avoid installing things to that directory? I don't have but one drive so how should I install stuff? Just create a custome folder called whatever and place it on the c drive? Do I just make one folder for all games for example:

C:/Coot's Games

Or do you have to create a new empty folder for each game?

Thanks again.

The UAC is there to protect vital system files and stop unauthorised programs from running without your knowledge so leaving it on is a good idea if you use your PC for everything. The problem is for gaming is that it considers the program files folder as vital.

If like me you use one PC just for gaming and have another PC for everything else then its probably safe to turn UAC off.

As for the separate folder yes C:/Coot's Games would be OK, you could call it anything you like.
For instance my games are on the G drive in a folder called games that has subfolders called Flight, Misc, Race, Shooter and Steam.

Thanks for the help. If a game does not allow you to you to browse to a different directory, what should you do? I just installed Risen and it does not allow me to change the directory like most things.

Sorry to jump in on your post TopGun. You all just happened to be hitting on some points that I was wondering about myself.

Seems a bit of an oversight not allowing you to install where you want.

If it was me I'd try just dragging and dropping it to where I wanted it and then see if it runs.
Only problem is it might have hooks in the registry that could need editing to get it to work or if it has copy protection that needs to know where its installed.

IMO it would still be worth a try as in the worst case you'd have to re install it if it doesn't work.
