What an amazing, amazing song this is when sung by Johnny Cash. It never gets old. What a voice he had!

I love the Outlaws version also. This version is more heavily guitars.

Now back on track. I love Johnny Cash too. His last couple of CD's were among his best.

It just amazes me that he could take a Nine Inch Nails song and turn it into one of his own.

This one is off American IV

Yeah, I'm a big fan of cowboy songs too. Marty Robbins did some great stuff; Mr Shorty, Big Iron, etc.

In the dark in the field I would silently sing Night Riders Lament and think about how different some lives are and how differently they are measured.

Cowboy/Western music is some of my all time favorite music as well. I grew up listening to Marty Robbins. He's one of my all time singing heroes. One of my other cowboy/singer songwriter favorites is Michael Martin Murphey. He has a nice version of this one too from his Cowboy Songs II cd I believe. I also really enjoy a version that Burl Ives does as well.

Here's the Burl Ives one. I enjoy the instrumental on his version as well as some of the other little things that makes his version his. I couldn't find MMM's version.

This message board kills my wallet between games and songs. I am going to have to visit ITunes when I get home this afternoon.

Hey MadDog cool thanks for that! There's country folk all over. Its hard to resist that pedal steel.

I believe Marty Robbins was one of the first to really incorporate steel guitar as well as using trumpets and such. And he could do it all. Country and Western, popular, Calypso, Hawaiian.

He also served in the Solomon Islands during WWII.
