Jason,
In another thread about licensing issues, you stated the following:
"As has been stated by me and others elsewhere, the always online connection for most single play elements will be going away soon. The always online connection is clearly stated on the box and in the system requirements. We know it's unpopular and they are changing it, but it has been a very good system in other ways. Just need to find a balance.
Jason"
The one item that caught my eye and not sure if it was just a mistake, but you stated the online connection requirement will be going away for MOST single play elements. I was under the impression once the offline mode was implemented, that would mean no internet connection requirement while playing, especially single player. Can you clarify what single player modes would still require the internet connection even after the update?
This has me a little concerned, especially after recent server outages and the promise of using offline play.
Thanks!

I would quess that means career wont still work without online (as they are currently saved neoqb servers). Easiest for them (code wise) to do would be just drop server check in single missions.
You can get used to everything, but icicle in the a**. It melts before you get used to it.

Wow...I hope that is not the case with careers. Personally I could care less about leaderboards and such since if I'm playing single player, I have no desire to compare myself to others. If this offline mode turns out be be only usable for missions, it will be a big let down for sure. To some perhaps. Patric Wilsons campaing generator is better anyway than current game one and you could use that even if offline would be limited to single missions.

I'd guess that most people have the "mods on" box checked so they can use user made skins. Your campaign stats aren't recorded then, or updated, whatever. I wonder if info still gets sent to Neoqb?

Well maybe the comprimise would be allowing both modes. Have an option where people can play offline with careers and then one if they want to be compared on leaderboards. I guess to me is if your going to say your implementing offline mode, should mean you can use all features without the internet connection (except multiplayer). Im just quessing that career stays online only. Only reason for that is that it needs more coding to change than single missions. Also they might do career mode more dynamic with some online elements in it (played with the idea of it in sukhoi.ru forums).

But your last mission results, kills, awards, etc are stored there. So game needs to connect there and get the info anyway. Some of the career generator code might be stored there aswell.

Guys - I can't go into details at this stage but once Neoqb announce what you can and cant do with the off line play then we can discuss what the impact is on us.
Every viewpoint is being considered and feedback provided from the Beta team to the devs on what works and what people would like to see (not saying that everything that we want goes into dev either).

There are a lot of people wanting to buy this but not wanting online connection at any time. I don't think any explanation given so far means that this is going to happen. Though it seems to me some guys have bought it on that understanding. Will you, or won't you have to log on each time you want to play it? IOW, if Neoqb servers pack up permanently in the future, so does your ability to play?
And what is the point of asking beta players what they want? they already play the sim. Seems to me that if it is intended that you could buy this game and play it whenever you want to without ever again connecting it to the internet, you wouldn't want to be asking beta players anything, would you?

Jason,
I hope I did not jump the gun when I bought RoF on the understanding the offline career would actually go offline.
I move house again in a month or two and then again towards the end of the year when my house is built and I will be less than impressed if I find I cannot play RoF at these times.
Cheers,
Teddy Bär

Why don't you all just wait and see what Neoqb say you will get, because at the moment you are just guessing and assuming that they only ask the beta testers and the beta testers are OK with the online authentication model.

That is true we are all guessing, but that is because we haven't heard any details of what to expect. These rumors could die if the developer would state the planned vision of how offline would work and what features will and will not be available. When there is silence, it causes all to speculate the worst since we think the developer does not want to tell us the bad news. A simple statement like "when playing offline you'll have the ability to play in all modes (career/single missions)" would go along way. I don't care how they make it happen or even when, but some info would be useful. Until then, speculation will continue.
