MMOG's cost money to run, hence the subscription model. They are much cheaper today than they ever used to be. I remember paying $2 per hour to play Warbirds back in the day... Now you are looking at about $15 per month for unlimited play on AH2? Overall I would say that represents very good value if you play a lot. I sure wish I could play AH2 or Warbirds again but my satellite connection has far too much lag.

Lord me too Rix. I remember the old ICI days when it was 2 bucks an hour. We had some squadron mates running up 150 dollar am month bills. I ran mine up to 80 one month and my wife about skinned me.

I don't know of any free ones, at least not ones that are authorized by the company.

I don't mind paying for something monthly if I enjoy it. I am probably in the minority though. The way I figure it is if I pay $15 a month, and 40 to 50 hours a month enjoyment, it really isn't that much. I would spend that much or more for a two hour movie at the theatre or buying a DVD.

I like "YsFlight". It's free, and runs well even on older computers. I use it with LINUX and with Windows. The graphics are outdated, but the software design allows creation of aircraft with sophisticated flight models, and the online, head-to-head mode is pretty well implemented. There are people flying it online, in Internet competition, all the time, and there are hundreds of simulated aircraft available for free, that were created by an active user community.

Note that some of the planes that come stock with the original download don't have very accurate flight models. If you want to go online in realistic situations with the best servers, you'll need to download some additional, more realistically modeled planes.

You can learn a lot about it here:

I still fly AH after nearly 10 years in the game and its still plugging along. FSO's on Friday nights bring out somewhere between 300-500 players depending on the time of year and the scenario. To me that is worth the $15 a month for those three frames each month. They just adjusted the main arenas back to a single arena with as many as 850 players in at one time...I think but if I am playing I spend more time in the Axis vs Allied arena when doing that.

Oh and Fighter Ace is dead but there are rumors out there that it might be coming back to life. Other than that you still have Warbirds plugging along but from what I can tell their active player base is way down to under 100 on each night compared to AH which has at least that many on in the middle of the afternoon during the weekdays.

Over the years I have flown wb, fa, ah, and the one that keeps drawing me back is ww2ol. I think it is the opportunity to do everything from infantry, tanking, naval, plus air ops. Living in hope that oneday they will be able to revamp the rather dated graphics.
