The more I poke around with this the more astonished I become. Apparently, there is some connection between this game and the Starfire game involving David Weber before he started writing Honor Harrington books.
It's still intimidating, but this looks to be the 4x equivalent to Dwarf Fortress.
The systems in this game do make a logical sense. The underlying math seems plausible. The flexibility in things to design and build is CRAZY. Like Valar said, there is a believability to the whole proceedings, though I have not yet had combat myself. The interface is a sheer vertical cliff, but the Aurora forums are organized and the creator, Steve, is very accessible...
Harpoon in space is not a bad analogy, though this is a broader experience.
For some reason, this has captured my attention in a way that X3 never did. That felt like a whole lot of grind for no real reward. I play GalCiv2 and it's many expansions, and this is far more detailed, tactically speaking. I love the shipbuilding of Nexus and Sword of The Stars, and this seems to be alot deeper, even if you only ever see a yellow dot to represent your ship.
Not really sure what I'm saying here, but yeah, if you can get past the looks, there does indeed seem to be something very cool here.
