I'm looking for a game to play a role playing roll.
i want to be just another pilot in the squadron. I would like competent AI pilots in the squad, with varying skills...sort of like Falcon 3.0 where your squadmate improve with experience and you actually develop a bond with them and try and keep them alive!
Do you have any recomendations for a game like this? WW2 or modern era's are my favorite...

I`m afraid to say, AFAIK the old days of simulations with role playing elements are past. Nowadays you will eventualy find such things in story driven arcade flying games... Maybe the upcoming successor of IL2 BoB will have some kind of role playing elements.

ekut,

Unfortunately, I have to agree with EagleEye: the lack of the roll playing aspect you're talking about is what I miss about the 'good old days'. (I've been 'flying' since Compaq made the C64!).

If you don't mind bombers, I'd say B-17 Flying Fortress II is probably the only relatively recent simulation that does the role playing aspect well. You have the possibility to manage the entire squadron, which means selecting the bomber crews and deciding who gets to fly the mission. And you will feel genuinely sorry when they do not make it back to base.

Jane's F/A-18 also uses some role playing (you can follow your fellow pilot's development, select who will be flying with you), though the game interface doesn't really convey the atmosphere for it. Still, I have fond memories of an AI pilot named Alison smile

Hi,

In EAW (European Airwar) the AI´s skill change with their experience.

In Single mission mode you can adjust their skill by hand, but in career mode, the skill of the Ai´s depends on the number of missions they survived and the moral depends to the current situation(outnumbered or not, defending the homeland or not etc) and the behaviour of the leader(you maybe).

Greetings,

Knegel

EAW. Graphically it is very outdated but the storyline is outstanding.

There is no real modern sim that does the immersion factor as well.

If you honestly want pilots of varying skills then go with a dedicated online flight simulation like Aces High II or Warbirds. You never know what the quality of your opponent is. Joining a dedicated squad means you are flying not with an AI person on missions but with someone you actually know and care about. It is a completely different feeling when your wingman gets shot down because you didn't stick with him.

Compaq didn't make the C64, Commodore did.

Did anyone mention CFS2? I just reinstalled it and cranked the graphics all the way to 1920 x 1200 x 32. Oh baby! I always loved CFS2 more than CFS3. The immersion factor feels deeper in CFS2. This sim is still awesome!
