How do I install the patch? I tried to unzip it into the game directory but it wouldn't work after doing that.

What wouldn't work, the patch or the game?

Is your game currently patched to 4.08m (or alternately, to the 4.09 beta)?

Did you download the torrent or the full version of the patch? If you downloaded the torrent, did you use a torrent downloader like uTorrent to retrieve the full patch (in, not assume the low kilobyte tracker was actually the patch)?

Is your game 'clean' or modded?

My game is a clean install of the 1946 game.

Think you can only install 4.09 over 4.08 and not a clean install.

The IL-2 1946 DVD is v4.07m.
You need to patch it to v4.08m.
Then patch to v4.09m. (It is 567 MB in size.)
Then use the v4.09m skins patch. (It is 260 MB in size. This step is not necessary but it does add a lot of nice skins.)
