I used to play EAW all the time until my previous system wouldn't run it. I want to get it set-up right on my new system. I have read some different things on how to install it (install vs copy). I have the original Microprose EAW with manual and quick refernce card.

I am asking for a mentor to treat me like your brain-damaged Uncle and help me do it right from the start.

Any takers ?

Well here goes smile
I would suggest you install 1.28C.
Instructions for setting up the install folder from the EAW CD are included in the readme.
We always recommend a copied EAW folder not one set up by installing from the EAW CD.
I was running it on a Windows 7 64 bit release candidate test installation with no problems. Currently I am using the 32 bit version.

From the readme : Make a new EAW folder and copy the "DLL" files (except "_SETUP.DLL), the "CDF" files, and the "CHATLINE.TXT" file from the MicroProse or Infogames CD into it. Also copy the "MUSIC" folder.

My question is do I copy everything and just delete the setup.dll file, or just copy the DLLs, CDFs,Chatline.txt and the Music folder and ignore all the other stuff like the DSG and Ereg folder and eaw, etc?

Then do I run it once before patching 1`.28c ? I remember that before we ran it once after installing, then applied the patch.

I don't want to be dense, but I really do want to get this right.

That's what you do. The 1.28C installer will add new files.

First off - Thanks for your assist.

I used to plat EAW all the time. I had all the mods, weather, skins, aircraft modifier, etc and still have them on CDs.

I was so disappointed when my then new system wouldn't run EAW.

This new system I got I based the video card (ATI) on what had the best chance of running EAW. Funny to be buying a new system and one of the factors in components was would it run a 10 year old sim. That shows how much I liked EAW.

So getting this right is quite important to me.

I will make the first attempt at this tonight.

Friends don't let friends buy computers that don't run EAW.

Greasings oldgrognard. Once you have EAW installed you can copy it to a thumb drive. Then you can plug that into any pc and try to run it. EAW does not have to be 'installed'. This way you can always try a machine before you buy it.

I am in the USA, Kansas City, Missouri. I can be of some help and will be awake when Jel is asleep.

I just "bumped" a thread I started a couple of weeks ago (1.28C and 7217).

Having a problem.

Went to the other thread and downloaded the link. saved it and then ran it. Openeed the folder and copied the EAW.exe.
Went to my EAW folder and replaced the EAW I had there with this one.

Problem comes when I click on EAW it says I have to have to have full official EAW installation (CD or payed download) to run EAW1.28c.

When I put in the disk it go to autoplay and takes me to the screen where I can choose INSTALL, EXPLORE CD, and EXIT.

Leaving that open I went to the EAW folder and ran the EAW.exe

It doesn't even give the 7217 error message now.

That is better- believe it or not smile

1.28C is working, but you needed to have all the CDFs from the installation disk in your EAW directory, before you update it to 1.28C.
So that the code development team does not infringe copyright by supplying a complete EAW installation, the 1.28C exe checks for the presence and sizes of some of the CDF files (and a few others) which have not been modified. If there is a problem it generates the error message that you got.
