To quote from Anand:

Quote:

There are two things that become very clear when looking at our data for the 5970

1. It’s hands down the fastest single card on the market
2. It’s so fast that it’s wasted on a single monitor

AMD made a good choice in enabling Crossfire Eyefinity for the 5970, as they have made a card so fast that it basically shoots past everything on the market that isn’t Crysis. All of our action games that aren’t CPU limited do better than 100fps at 2560x1600, and RTSs are doing just under 60fps. The 5970 is without a doubt Overkill (with a capital O) on a single monitor...

Newegg had some HD5870 and HD5850 today (HD5850 still there as I write this). I actually put the HD5850 in my cart to verify. Then, I removed it.

Newegg had 2 brands of ATI HD5970 on sale today (over $600). Went on sale after I posted the above note. They came and went.

So, HD58xx and HD59xx are not totally lacking. A few pop up every so often.

Newegg says more Sapphire HD5870 coming in on Nov 23. May be some other brands before that, I suppose.

Wonder how the 5890 will stack up against two crossfired 5870's.

Anandtech tests all the combinations and the Nvidia cards.

All The Cards You Want: Compared

In some games, its just as fast. In some, a bit slower. The HD5970 Overclocks too.

As I write this, Newegg has one in stock. They've had HD58xx and HD59 cards off and on all day.

AMD/ATI download site has the New November Catalyst 9.11 drivers out. There is a "hotfix" for the new HD5970 cards showing on the page -- just in case one of you has one already.

Weirdness here Allen:

While the Anandtech tests show the 5970 edging past corssfired 5870's, all the other sites, including Tweaktown show the opposite.

Thoughts?!

Depends on the rig, but it should probably have a bit lower performance than 2 5870's. From what I've seen from the guru3d.com review though it's only due to the lower speeds of memory and gpu they had to used to be atx compliant. If you overclock it to 5870 speeds, it has about the same performance, and from what I've read it's quite safe to overclock it too. Anyway, price-wise, and due to Eyefinity crossfire support on the 5970, it beats 2 5870's by a lot.
