...and is there any disadvantages to doing so?

Is there any slowdowns or performance bottleneck issues?

Other issues I need to consider?

Yes, you can. The ones that fit in a standard drive slot in your case are no problem. The external ones may come with a PCI eSATA card that you would want to use. The one I used didn't mention the card in the description, but did come with one and the eSATA cable. The USB or firewire cable they probably come with I assume would work, but wouldn't be fast and I haven't tried that before.

Nope, no issues. But ideally make sure it's not some kind of USB connection (which might be a tad slow and somewhat less reliable) but the new eSATA connector, like the green glowing guy said.

sSATA is the same protocol like internal SATA, just with some extras for securing the connector.

The only bad thing about eSATA is it's usually not run from the native chipset. Like my board uses a Jmicron controller for the eSATA. I would not want to run an OS on a flaky Jmicron chipset.
