No apps installed-apps are web based no onboard data storage- storage is web based http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/11/g...ure-is-the-web/http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Video%3A_Google_Offers_Overview_of_Chrome_OSWhat will this mean for simulations? What will this mean for personal privacy that barely remains? How will this affect small business computer security for its intellectual property? Would this conceivably end piracy via Torrents and illegal streaming movie sites? Since apps are not installed, could you be forced to upgrade to new versions even when satisfied with old versions?

No thank you. I get iritated when I buy a game and it tells me it's only a license to *use* it. Having an OS that doesn't install anything just doesn't appeal to me at all.
As far as the piracy and illegal streaming movie sites, I think it would increase it. Just think about a youtube version of a torrent set up. A website that streams movies.

If it completely replaced what we have today?
No apps installed-apps are web based = Monthly fee for access to full featured versions.
no onboard data storage- storage is web based = Monthly fee for more than the tiny free space.
What will this mean for simulations? = Monthly fee to play and micro purchases for content!
What will this mean for personal privacy that barely remains? = All you kid pictures are belong to us* (*any bathtub pics will be reported)
How will this affect small business computer security for its intellectual property? = Corporate basement full of proprietary hardware/software development?
Would this conceivably end piracy via Torrents and illegal streaming movie sites? = Dunno how. Maybe if file sharing and streaming apps were simply not provided through the cloud? Or indeed ANY app not approved by whoever manages the cloud?
Since apps are not installed, could you be forced to upgrade to new versions even when satisfied with old versions? = Why not, if it's included in your monthly fee bracket!
But I don't think it'll replace what we have any time soon.

FYI Deceptis, pretty much all software is "sold" as just a license to use, including Windows.
I don't like the all-online approach, I like having my stuff available when traveling and not having to always be connected. Plus all the privacy and other issues that have been brought up.

why do they assume every person who owns a computer automatically has internet access (or a fast one anyways). That's why I don't buy stuff thru Steam or other online distributors because almost every place I've lived has limited access; usually DSL is the fastest and it's still slow at that. I don't want to buy some software then spend 3+ days DL'ing the damn thing

I know, but having it installed gives me some sort of control over it. If I am using "web" based software, I really don't have any control at all.

I didn't read the whole article so I might have missed something later on, but it says it is designed for netbooks. So I guess internet access is just assumed. However, if you have internet access like I did for a while you would probably end up chucking the netbook in the trash and going back to a traditional laptop.

I watched the presentation online today and I don't like what I saw. Thoughts already posted so I won't rehash it. There are a number of issues I have with it and unanswered questions. http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2904307/Google_Chrome_OS_presentation.html#Post2904307

It's not so much that I don't have net access right now (obviously)..but in the future what's to guarantee that I can have access? If I'm on a sailboat and want to run my games on my laptop or something, I want the freedom to put a disk in the drive and have it run without any connection/validation at all.

It's just Google's way to try to undermine Microsoft, because they cannot make an OS without MS suing the living crap out of them. It's absurd to think that microprocessor/computer technology has come this far only for a PC to become some kind of superterminal.

I have to give a friend of mine credit - he warned me of this six months ago when I installed the Chrome Browser.
Google - but also Microsoft - are trying for one and the same thing here: Web-based computing which turns your own desktop into a simple terminal, like in the days of the first super computers. Only difference being, this time it runs over internet.
And main difference being: They all want to charge you for monthly access. No more piracy. No more refusing to upgrade. They will sell you a small box that connects to your flat screen TV, and from there it's all a monthly "service". Once you have moved your whole workflow and data to their system, you would find it almost impossible to chancel the contract.

There, a worthy quote for the future!

I look forward to the day when I have to make a choice about continuing to own a computer and putting up with this crap or saying to hell with it and moving on with my life minus the hands of big brother resting on my shoulders (and if you dont get that line, you will someday... one way or another).
The sad thing is, there is a segment of society (and its a huge segment at that) who are too stupid to realize how controlled they are allowing themselves to become, AND THEY LIKE IT. Just a flock of sheeple.
