Your probably going to have to reinstall it to another drive. I bet it has some important registry entries. I know you can move Il-2 1946 folder around and even burn it to a DVD for safe keeping with no ill effects, but I bet not with a Microsoft product.

If you have a fairly new Intel chipset, you can add another drive and go with RAID. Can't be done with Nvidia though without starting over.

You could try isntalling the base game into a new directory to keep your registry updated, then open Windows Explorer, select your old FSX folder, cut/copy & paste.

I tried to do just that a long time ago and gave up. There are just to many registry/sub-directory entries to contend with and many are coded. And it's a bear to completely uninstall FSX.

Reinstalling FSX and then "transferring" addons doesn't work well either because many addons require some of the codes in the registry to use as an install path.

Just reinstall new on other hard drive.

ah, I forgot that most FSX addons do have installers and probably registry entries...yeah, probably better to do a clean install.

Well, for FS9 there's really no issue simple copying the folder. I'm fairly sure the basic FSX install isn't that different, and then it depends on the kind of addons.

FSX is like a "virus" when it installs; it "splatters" code all over the place and unless you know what it is, you can't tell the difference.

My first experience with a borked FSX uninstall resulted in a call to MS tech support for assistance. After 1-1/2 HRS! on the phone with a tech deleting +150 entries, it was a nightmare.

With MS product, I now always rtfm on uninstall procedures 3x's before cutting the first time...lol

Yeah, with the activation it has, I imagine FSX is a real Frankenstein of registry entries.

Well, that (and some missing FSX addons) clearly settle the question if I'll ever upgrade.

How did they botch that up so badly... it was one of the best features from previous versions that you could backup and install your entire folder with all addons by Drag & Drop.

Good question. Maybe "they" the devs saw the writing on the wall earlier than MS suspected and left MS a legacy...lol

Between MS FSX "how to" uninstall and Advanced Uninstaller Pro, I've had no more problems, but it remain a hassle. I suppose, though, it's less painful than reformatting!...lol

Once you "know" what to do, it's not much of a hassle. It boils down to what addons you want to try/buy and how they'll integrate with FSX.

Pretty much everything has been tested with SP1.

"Most" everything has been tested with SP2, but your mileage may very.

It seems that Acceleration has caused the most grief with addons; you'll need to do research on those. Your mileage will very.

Probably the best "how to" install link I've ever found is here:
http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=29041

Please note before hand that the above link is best viewed using IE and not Firefox. There's additional info on some of the major addons that Firefox won't show...sheesh!

FSX is really a great sim and many addons for FSX are rendered much better than in FS9. I have both installed and use them both. Some FS9 files will work in FSX and visa versa, but not all that I like. That's why I fly both.

Hope this helps.
