Hi,

something dont sounds logical to me.

When you already extracted the EAW1.28c patch, on what 'setup' did you click??

For me it sounds like this:

You copyed all EAW files from the CD to an directory on your HD, then you did run the EAW1.28c patch and afterward you did run the EAW1.0 setup.

This would explain why you get a "this is not valid win32 application" error and why you get the 7217 error, cause by running the EAW1.0 setup you overwrote some EAW1.28c files, specialy the new EAW.exe.

If my assumption i correct, you should have stopped after extracting the EAW1.28c patch, then you should have created a EAW1.28c shortcut on your desctop.

Greetings,

Knegel

Jasper-- Welcome, and my admiration for your pluck and determination.
Remarkable that you refused to use a pirated copy, even when you were "screwed" by an eBay seller. I would complain.
Your English is excellent, by the way.

You hit the right combination: copy as many good files as you can from the corrupted CD, then install the 1.28c patch , just as Knegel said in his post above.

If you check the 1.28c README, it spells out the critical files needed from the CD. These files 1.28c installer must have when you copy to another directory.

Many happy hours flying! You deserve them all. dance

Also, check Sandbagger's "Tally-Ho" for many Key Files:

I tried that, bbut when I start the game using that method I hear the sounds of the intro movie, but when the movies ends my computer locks up, and I need to reboot it.

I have no clue why the setup did work last time.

If I copy the files and run the 1.0 setup, I get the problems described in my first post (I cant select anything to instal and the setup crashes)

If I unzip the 1.28 patch and then run the setup the problem is still there,

If i copy the files, and start the 1.2 patch the program that updates cant find the directory.

When I copy the files, run the 1.28 patch AND THEN start the 1.2 update the program can find the directory. I ran the 1.2 patch, but the setup still did not work. (and the weird thing is: although the updater is named 1.2, the readme is from 1.1)

I think is has something to do with the "jim' patch. As the directory (I have lots and lots of eaw directorys scattered across my computer, each with a different setup) where the setup DID work has Jim in it.

-----------

Just tested it, and that isnt the case.

Oke, here is what I did and what I think caused it: as you know there where certain files I couldn't copy; some kind users of this forum send me a few. To get the rest I downloaded a illegal copy and took the last files from there (yeah, I know its evil, and that Wudpecker is going to be very dissapointed =P , but then again, the cd should have worked in the first place and I only took one file to repair a game I bought.)

With the correct files in place I unzipped 1.28 , created a shortcut and started the game from there. I could here the intro movie, but couldn't see anything and my computer locked up.

Afterthat I copied al the files I could copy, + all the files I 'received and ran the setup. the setup worked in the sense that I could select an instal type, but during the setup I received an error message. (-133 error)

A ran the 1.28c patch (I couldn do the 1.2 patch as it can not find the directory without 1.28c installed) and this time the setup worked! However, when I try to run the game I get the "not a vallid win32 application" error

So i've not figured out what I takes to run the setup, no i'll have to find a way to make the 1.28c patch work, as the 'regular' way of installing does not seem to work (it starts the intro video, ((although I can only hear it, not see)) and when the main menu loads (blackscreen as well) the game crashes.

Any ideas?

Jasper

and then start the setup it works. Although I still get the win 32

Quick update:

installing the 1.2 patch solves the "not a vallid windows32.." thing. It does , however, introduce a new problem: when starting the game I asks for the CD. But even with the cd inserted I cannot play as I get the infamous 7217 error.

Quick update 2:

I installed the 7217 fix from http://www.sandbagger.uk.com/EAWKeyFiles.html Created by Jelly - Sydbod.
(File size 688 KB).
The intro are now vissible (in weird colors, but that is oke) , the game still crashes when the moveis are finished though.

Jasper-- That is weird indeed.
Some small thing is wrong. I know how easy it is to do, when you are trying everything you can think of.
So please do not be annoyed if I go through each step. It may help you notice the wrong thing.

It is a great idea to use Windows 98se to play EAW. The game was meant for that, and problems should be at a minimum.
But EAW will work on XP, Vista, or the new Windows 7.

Keep these things in mind:

---If the new 1.28c patch installer cannot find the EAW directory, put the patch right in the EAW directory.
If you still do not see it, notice the patch installer has a little box with "..." in it. This is just to the right from the box with the current directory listed for install. Click on it, and it will call up a directory list to put the patch in. Find the directory you want.

---To get the original game started, use your "borrowed" files that some of your new friends here sent you. (No, I do not blame you for doing this. After you tried to do what is right, extreme measures are needed.)
Do not use ANY files from your damaged CD. They are all suspect now.
Put all the borrowed files in a NEW directory.
Remember that "eaw.exe" or "EAW.EXE" must saying nothing but that. Later, 1.28c will allow other exe names. But not now.
Also check to see that you have a file "eaw.ini". It is the main control file for game options.
Try to start the game.

If you get an error message, do not be surprised (you have seen so many). "7217" Error you know. You should not get "This is not a Win32 Application" or "Put CD in drive". If you do, you can leave the CD in the drive, untrustworthy as it is. Do not install anything from it.
Any other error messages, please copy the number and report here.

---Now you have choices. This is a "clean" version of the game. Keep a copy of this directory. It is your basic resource.
---You can install the 1.28c patch, the newest one.
Or---You can install the 1.2 patch. This is the oldest patch. Keep a copy. It is also a basic resource for all other games
Or---You can copy just the files listed in the 1.28c "readme" to another new directory. Put the 1.28c patch in that directory and try an install.
Or---You can use JIM on a new directory with the 1.2 patch files in it. JIM is the last work-around for 7217 other than new video card drivers.

I tried the things you suggested but in the end, every time the game started all I got was a black screen and a crash. I could here the music of the intro playing, but could not see it. And when the intro finished the game crashed.

For some reason my pc does not seem to like 1.28c

Replace the movies.cdf with this empty one:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~rabartel/DownLoad/Movies.cdf

rightclick the link and select 'save target as'

Then try switching off the movies in the eawe.ini (edit it in notepad):

[EAW]
PlayIntro=0

[Media]
Video Playback=0

Go into your keyboard configuration screen and select the default keysetting and try a single mission, that is if these entries are still there in the 1.28 version.

I also have a similar minor glitch in my EAW with the opening. I hear the sound, but only get a blackish screen. No airplane flying around... But if I click or hit a key it continues on normally. I'm running Win7 with an ATI card. I did a full install from the disk and then ran the self-installing 1.28c.

Hi,

in EAW1.28c its enough to edit this EAW.ini value:

[EAW]
PlayIntro=0

Then no movie will get played.

btw, thats not a EAW1.28c problem, the movies are the same in all EAW versions, but some systems dont seems to like the smacker format.

Greetings,

Knegel
