I don't have an ironclad "explanation" -- just some thoughts.

I expect the HD5970 at stock speeds to be slower than two HD5870. At Anand it was about the same in one case. That could be due to having a CPU dependent game.

Anand tested both standard speed and overclocked. I do remember from the HD4870X2 vs HD4870 Crossfire that the X2 ran slightly faster when the clock speeds were the same. That was due to an "extra circuit" in the X2. That circuit received notable publicity then.

Overall, when overclocked, performance will depend on the overclock -- may not be the same overclock at every site that does it. Also matters if the game is CPU or GPU dependent.

Hence, slight differences between test sites is reasonable, to me.
