Was wondering... I have a Direct X 10 card... do you have to have a Direct X 11 video card, or is it just a driver update or something like that... not sure how that works.

I ask because DiRT2 for the PC is coming soon, Steam is taking pre-orders now, and it's a Direct X game.

Thx.

For the DX11 effects you need a DX11 card. Otherwise you only get DX10 and DX9 GFX options.

so that sucks... I bought a 400 dollar card for Direct X 10 games, (which was only about 3 of them, lol)... I hope this don't become a habit.

Thx for the info.

(I'll probably stick with 10... till more games support and need 11)

DX10 was simple a death-born idea.

As said, some of the changes in DirectX11 need a new gfx card, however others (specifically the "driver using more than one core" one) do not. Actually when you read Microsoft's paper on it it does sound like DX11 would be a big step forward, even on DX10 cards.

I recently attended an IGDA event in Frankfurt, where the Battleforge guys (EA Phenomic) are located and they held a talk and I spoke to the guy (lead engine dev) afterwards specifically about this subject. Battleforge - BTW very addictive game - runs on DX11 already, AFAIK it was the first game to do so, so this guy speaks from experience. He basically said the overhead of synching is so big that it makes no sense to run a DX11 game on a DX10 gfx card or even write a game in DX11 and think "Oh well, guys with either DX10 or DX11 gfx card can use it".

The good news was that porting a DX10 engine to DX11 is a very easy and very small job. Of course this is just the port; You will then want to add DX11 specific features like the tesselation.
