I appreciate the image-related humor.

Sounds like Windows 7 makes people happy, which is ultimately the goal. That's good for us PC people.

I had about the same experience. I'm a little more of a tech geek, but I've gotten tired of having to mess with it all to play games. W7 has been a really nice change of pace. I'm running it with the UAC set to the default until I know what exactly turning it down/off does. So far the only issue I'm having is migrating my old mail from T-Bird into my new install. Only game that's given me any issues is Flight Commander 2, which runs just fine under the XP virtual machine. The XP virtual machine also installed and ran without a hitch, just two very large files to download. Overall I'd call W7 a very positive step in the right direction by MS.

Thanks Guys. I'm hoping the more tech-savvy will fill in the gaps since I'm obviously not the ultra knowledgeable guy when it comes to hardware and software. I would have been curious what kinds of performance gains I realized going from XP 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit (if any). In a perfect world I would have done some FPS capturing prior to and after the upgrade..

I've been very happy with W7 thus far though. Everything I've put in the CD tray has installed (so far!)..

Thanks for the article! I have XP on my desktop still, but occasionally get to use my wife's Vista laptop. I don't much care for it, but thought a lot of that was just inexperience with Vista.

With luck W7 gets windows back on track.

I too stuck with XP when getting my i7 rig back in spring. In fact, having worked with Vista during my time as a conscript in the army i hated it sufficiently that it was a choice that also determined my RAM size. I stuck with three sticks of 1GB of tripple channel DDR3s, instead of going for something higher because i was sure i wasn't going to install Vista, hence no 64bits and no more than 3.5GB or so.

Maybe we're seeing a repeat of the old progression from win98SE to winME to XP, where winME was the one that didn't do well. Maybe this time it will be XP to Vista to W7, with Vista being the unfortunate stepping stone and we'll have an OS that will work well for the next decade or so in the form of W7.

I'm not going to install them just yet as it's somewhat of a pain to do a full migration. What i want to do is get a second 1.5TB drive first, should be about 100 euros by now, maybe lower, which will allow me to dual boot with XP and W7 without any hassles.

Thanks for the article. It's interesting that you chose to disable UAC; I bet a lot of other users go the same route as you. Seems like UAC is a real attempt by MS to increase the security of their OS but it will be sabatoged by many users. We won't want to deal with the hassle after the bad habits we (myself included) developed from earlier Windows where running with restricted permissions was nearly impossible in a home environment.
I also work on mac and linux machines where the equivalent of UAC is effective (not perfect) and not really a hassle at all. Has it gotten to this acceptable level in W7 or is it still the nagging mother-in-law it was reputed to be in Vista?

I found it to just be a bit of a hassle whenever you wanted to run a download not approved by Microsoft. Or move .exe files around or access hidden directories. I'm comfortable leaving the protection down because I generally don't run .exe files downloaded off the internet unless I have a pretty good idea of their content. Does that mean I always know what's going on and will never get a virus? No..but I'm willing to live with the slight risk. I don't have any missile launch codes on my computer or anything..so I'm not too worried.. biggrin

And you're right..it might be a bad habit..but I guess we've become conditioned to it.
