It's not consoles that did anything to gaming, it's the gamers. People have a choice of pc, console or (better yet) BOTH. The market responds to demand, not the other way around.
I hate what the automatic transmission did to driving. I blame that for being the reason most people can't drive worth a crap. I blame whoever thought leather seats would look good in a truck for the US auto industry going to crap.
Regardless, it's the consumers that are to blame, they tell the manufacturers what to make. In gaming, they said they prefer an emphasis on consoles and a pretty simplistic game. Unfortunate, but don't blame consoles, blame everyone. Might as well blame Solitaire on the pc while you're at it, that's the most played game on pc. Maybe that led to the dumbing down of pc games?
A few of us are smart enough to game on both, you don't actually have to choose one or the other.
