Just found that i have send you a outdated str tool by mistake, a newer one is send now.

Report back if it work with that one!

I remember this problem, with the older tool. I had to implement a "tab" in front of the name to get the position right.

Afaik the new tool do it better.

kempston,

I got your file and took a look, comparing it to a default file:

You file is on the bottom, the default one on the top. See all the white area with no dots in the right panel? The program you used to edit the sting file is putting spaces in - the code for the spacebar is 20, you can see it in the pane on the left.

Try the second program Knegel sent you starting from scratch. I tried using your file in the editor I had and it came out the same as yours. But when I used a fresh, default file and replaced "P38H" with "Meteor" it came out fine. This should be the program Knegel sent you, so it should work.

But start with a new, default string file!!

Hello,

i just tested the editor i send you and it produce a normal pnames.str, where the names show up correct.

As CJ suggested, you probably need to use a absolut fresch Pnames.str out of the text_eng.cdf.

Greetings,

Knegel

kempston,

I used a program called a Hex Editor. The one I use is called Hex Workshop. There are many free ones available on the web. It is very useful for making quick changes HOWEVER in some files like a string file, if you make a change with a hex editor th new name MUST be the same length as the old one or you will have to change the address table in the first part of the program. If you look at my image of the hex editor, you will see a section at the top of each window that has "nonsense" showing on the right side. This is the address section, and it tells the exe file how many bytes from the beginning of the file a particular string starts.

So it's much easier to use the string editor.

I don't use the one you have shown, I have one that came later. I'll send it to you along with a fresh string file. Start there and see how it goes...
