Ok ... Going to make this brief for 2 reasons
1. I don't get a lot of spare time
2. I don't want to bore you!

Have new PC ... and please forgive my IT savvy, but very basically here are the specs....

Some sort of Intel quad core IE5
4GB Ram
Nvidia GTS 250 1GB
Windows 7 Home premium

Loaded EAW ... Got to quick launch ... saw the screen for about 2 secs and then it just folded ... back to desktop.

Firstly, as much as Win7 looks good and has all the bells and whistle's, I am not completely comfortable with it ... maybe too many whistle's!

I am not beyond changing the OS back to XP but my question is ....

Will this graph card work?

I do not want to go backwards only to find the same result. I may as well keep what I have and get use to it. It's taken a considerable amount of my time to understand Win7 and I can see many +'s for other applications which I utilise.
I'm sure there will be service packs in the near future to resolve not only mine, but other user's issues as well.
But this is not helping me to where I want to be at present.

The other choice I have is to use the PC previous to this new rig and load it with Win Mellenium (currently XP OS) ... I know this OS works with EAW and have the hardware to go with it from when I use to be online.
I would prefer not to keep changing PC's for the sake of a specific purpose if I can get away with it.
Sure, I can network them or dual boot etc. and get the same result ... but I like the simple life.

Again, if someone knows this card works with EAW on XP let me know .... I will be here again in a flash!!!!

Win7 can always be loaded again later, once they sort it out.

Kind Regards
Urban

Hi,

did you try to use glide mode??

Isnt there a compatibility mode or so??

Did you try only EAW1.2, or also EAW1.28c??

Good luck!

Hi Ralph...

Just did a new full load from original disk..

Did not update to latest versions as on offer here.

I figured if it could not handle the original to start with, then upgrades would be pointless. Been there, done that ... read the book ... bought the T-shirt ... now making a movie!!

Win7 has a tricky character about it and I have not seen any mods posted of late that lead me in the direction I wish to go.
I do not have a compatability option as it is 'Home Premium' ... not 'Ultimate'.

Again, what I am trying to find out ... Does the GTS 250 (I think this card is similar to the gt9800(X? maybe)) work with EAW within the XP OS?

I have no prob with XP and kinda like it ... quite happy to change back and leave Win7 sit on the shelf for a little while.

Cheers
Urban

Hi again,

"I figured if it could not handle the original to start with, then upgrades would be pointless."

Why do you think so?? EAW1.28c got a little more compatible with newer system than EAW1.2.

The correct way to install EAW is NOT to install it from CD, but to copy/paste the needed files(EAW1.28c readme), then run the EAW1.28c patch, or the EAW1.26e patch. EAW1.0 dont work on many new systems.

Regarding the graphiccard i have no idea, probably noone have, cause its not only related to the graphiccard. We saw some cards working with one PC, but not with a other.

It depends in big degrees to the drivers.

Greetings,

Knegel

Urban,

From what I can tell, and I'm no expert, but your card uses the
same driver as my new system does, at least that's what Nvidia
indicates. Its the same driver for 32, 64 bit system, XP or Win7.
191.07 WHQl. At least that's what seems to be at the Nvidia site,
under download drivers. You might want to check it out for yourself.

Comp specs are.
Intel Core i7 2.6Ghz
6 Gigs of Ram
64 Bit Windows 7 Professional
Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 896mb

EAW does run, but has some problems. When I firt start EAW,
the Main Screen has pyscho colours, but once I click on the
menu, for example Single Mission, that does clear up somewhat.
Some areas of the screen have wrong colours, but basically
readable. Same goes for the hangar screens.

Flying, everything looks fine so it is playable.

I do have problems with a scrambled briefing screen and map in
the pilot career mode.

Basically, I found that it will run on the new system, just some
graphic problems with screens before flying.

Hope that helps.

cheers
MadProf

p.s. Fortunately, I still have older comps that are working and EAW runs
fine on those with no problems at all.

I cannot give a complete solution as there are differnces in our systems, but I can tell you that:

1. I do not have EAW installed- I have a folder copied from another disk.

2. My Windows 7 is the release candidate test which will be valid until mext August, so I will try before I buy.
It has more features (for want of a better word) that the Home Premium would have, but I am not using compatability mode for anything.

3. In both Vista and Win 7 I have my user account level set to the minimum. There is a heap of protection in my router, and in other installed software to let me use this setting with confidence. This setting lets applications write to disk (such as creating an "eaw.ini"), which they might be prevented from doing with a higher user account level.

4. I do not have a nVidia card, but when I did have a series 8 card it gave the 7217 error with 1.2 and screen tearing with 1.28b using XP. However, it worked fine with both Vista Home Premium and Win 7.
