How do you feather a prop in FSX? In IL2 there was an actual key command labeled "feather prop" that you could use, but I do not see anything like that with FSX?

I was thinking of reducing RPMs to the lowest setting, but I am not sure if this would be the same as FP?

Either by dragging the appropriate lever in the VC or with key commands.

Check the key assignments menu to find it, it's labeled "Increase/Decrease Prop Pitch" or so.

Depends on aircraft as to were the button/lever is.

In our B-17 for FSX for example you would want to follow the checklist for feathering a prop and pressing the nice red button relating to the engine you want to feather.

I thought feathering was separate from Prop Pitch at least from an IL2 1946 perspective.

stage one is to forget il2.

Its a combat sim and theres not a single combat sim out there that simulates simply 'flying' very well.

Every aircraft is different and depending on the level of simulation you want will depend on how you handle things and in which aircraft you fly.

I'm not sure if it works in FS9/FSX, but in real life we often use "simulated feather" in some situations during training in the King Air. During checkrides in the actual aircraft if we are doing something with a somewhat elevated risk, such as a single-engine circle to land approach, the instructor will set the "failed" engine to a zero-thrust condition. I can't remember the actual numbers in the King Air, but it is basically something around 1900 RPM and 150 lbs. of torque. This will provide just enough power to simulate the engine being in the feathered condition without actually shutting down the engine and feathering it.

Just FYI.. smile

Wedge, it depends on the aircraft. Some have a push button that will feather the prop, others are feathered by pulling a propeller pitch lever all the way back to the stop. In IL-2 it is a separate key command but how you map it in FS is up to you.

This weekend I picked up the latest copy of Computer Pilot magazine.

As I was reading through the different articles I came upon a small section on pages 86 and 87 about prop management involving the very mission that brought my initial attention to feathering a prop in FSX. It turns out that the general key command for feathering a prop in FSX is to first select the engine (E + 1, 2, 3, or 4) then hit "CTL + F1."
