Magnificent, the best space flight sims released. There is also a highly active modding community which has brought the games right up to date for modern hardware/graphics/etc, and there are a ton of downloadable mods/campaigns/missions/total conversions, etc etc. If you want to try before you buy, there are a couple of TCs which are all in one installers, in particular the BSG and B5 mods. But, if you like space sims, you will want these. You can get them for about $6 at GOG.com Here's the getting started wiki link, take a look around, see what's on offer:- http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_started

FS/FS2 are probably considered, by most, as the space combat shooters, even today.
I'm gonna have to google it, but I'm almost positive that you can download FS2, for free, from SCP...

Well, I think there was some controversy w/ the free availability of FS2, but you can still get it for almost nothing. It's definitely worth the effort once you've included SCP/FSU.

Freespace 2 is a lot of fun. I haven't tried the first one yet. $6 at Gog.com http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2/Used the FSO mod at the link baltika put up. Pretty cool, with that, I was even able to run FS2 at high settings on my netbook. Classic of the genre. There's a similar game that came out last year I think called Dark Horizon, but it's a lot pricier and FS2 really seems to look just about as good, despite it's age. Haven't tried the B5 mod, but looking forward to it when I get the chance. Independance War 2 Edge of Chaos is another good one.

Looks like cool games, but being so old, have no idea If they will be really good or not. Can someone explain me If they are good? Thanks I picked up Freespace2 at gog.com for a few bucks (cheap, works with windowsXP, no DRM, direct download). Freespace2 is definitely a fun game that I missed the first time around the release of the game. There is also a free mod or mods on the interwebs to make teh graphics a little bit nicer than the original release. I never played Freespace. I believe i also saw an expansion/addon for Freespace? deadly threat? silent war? silent threat? or sumfink.

Downloading Freespace 2 now, thanks for the tip! I've tried Starshatter but somehow never really got into that game.

As others, head over to hard-light.net and get started. I would like to reccomend you start with Freespace 1 though--in some ways I think the campaign is better but in some ways not but you'll enjoy both. Freespace 2 starts out extremely hard and then gets easier for a while.

Personally, I would go with FS2. Especially since you can download the FS1 campaign converted to the Opensource FS2 engine, which looks a lot better than the original. Another thing: if you're not sure about the engine, give this a go: Wing Commander Saga You can download the episode for free, and you can see what the FS2 engine can do.
