I set up an old PC so that I could play my old games and one of them is LONGBOW.

My setup is:

AMD DURON
256MB Ram
30G HD
Windows 98 with latest patch
Geforce2 Video card with latest Nvidia Drivers & direct X 8.1

I installed LONGBOW. But when I started to play by clicking the icon.

I get the error:


ERROR: Not enough files and buffers
Increase to FILES=45 AND BUFFER=45 in config.sys -F(33)

I hope someone can help me with this.

Hi John, I've just consulted my LB1 notes and I got this error when I tried to play in DOS mode (of course, I was thinking about LB Gold which also has a Windows exe).

I don't actually think there's a way around this. The only way that I (and the rest of us here) have been able to come up with is to run the game through the MS-DOS emulator DOSBox. But, to run LB1 through DOSBox you will unfortunately need a modern PC as LB1 is VERY laggy in anything under a dual-core processor.

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't think you'll have any luck on your retro system. I know it's strange that this DOS game won't run on Win98 - I was shocked also. Win95 is probably the only version of Windows where the game will run OK. Other than that, it's MS-DOS only!

Just a suggestion, try to install Dos and then install win98. As far as I remember Dos4GW was required to run it win98. Try googling on how to install win98 over a dos install.

u can do 2 things, 1 make a dos boot disk u can do that from lb1 disk.
or 2 press start and select run and type msconfig hit return. then find the sys file. edit the file were u type
FILES=45
BUFFER=45

save and return to desktop. run lb
