Hi Guys. I thought I'd better start a new thread for this rather that hi jack the SPAW thread. The other day CJ sent me his nose file, but in fitting it to my model I found I had to change quite a bit. Sorry CJ. I found the nose to be a very complex shape, with the raised gun mountings, and spaces between the guns. Anyhow, this is how the model looks now. I work in L/H side profile only and then mirror the model, and join them together. That way the mapping is always identical, as are the elements. Rivet counter comments welcome.

ahh, a pleasure to watch the master at work.
I doubt you have any elements left over, Colonel. What about the exhaust ports? Any room?

Hi John,Which version are you developing? It looks like an early 'B' or 'C' version of the P-40. If so, will you also be making the later P-40'D' or 'E' version? Nose looks pretty good so far.... Cheers mate David

That's okay John.... as long as the ladies don't make that same mistake I think we'll be alright The model your working on is the early 'B/C' model which will suit the DAW Campaign. However, once you've completed it. I'll ask my compatriant if he would convert it into the later 'E' version for SPAW... That is, if he doesn't mind... Cheers mate David

And what versions will Ade need? I'm adding 3dz exhaust stacks, but to do it I've had to totally rebuild the nose again! But, it will be worth the effort. Once I have a good nose section, it will be sent over to CJ to mod it into all the other front ends. At that stage, I'll build the later tail. Once we have all these bits it should be possible to have every P-40 combo in HR.

Sweet!!!
The effort to get the RS working on that complex nose was just too much for me. Every time I tried to add something on the top it would go into a loop....
Keep it rockin', John!

Despite other things going on in my life, I am still working on the P40 revamp. I've now got a nearly fully finished fuselage. The wings and Prop now need to be finished off.

Hi Guys.
I'm still working away on this update, but my right hand is giving me so much grief, I can only work for short periods each day.I'm remapping the new wing I have, and I now have the entire lower surface done, and I'm doing the top now, so here is light at the end of the tunnel.
Once I've finished mapping, then I can add the flaps, to the wing, before duplicating the right, and adding the insert codes for the gear.
In the old days this would have been a weeks work, but this could take me to Christmas to finish, with luck.

Hi John,
Feel for you about the hand, as I fell and impaled my right hand on a broken milk bottle last February. I have limited use and nerve damage, and the good old NHS is being as slow as ever - referred to a plastic surgeon in June and will be lucky to see him in February 2010, so lord knows when they will have a shot at fixing it, if ever.
Take your time - I am sure it will be worth it. Assume you got the PM I sent you a while ago?
Cheers
Peter

I've added the prop, which is using the single painted disk type, rather than using lots of elements. Now to add action codes to the flaps, finalize the mapping, and get the landing gear finished.

Looking great John! The 3dz detail you have gone to on this is amazing - love the wing roots and wheel wells, and the nose actually looks curved It's amazing how far you guys keep pushing the boundaries - S! All the best for the finishing touches. Chompy

Yes Kempston, I did a lot of work to get the flaps to work, because they have to be built into the wing models. Life in 3DS world is a lot easier than in 3dz world, but once you get your head around how things work, most things are easy to do. I'm just trying to find my way back into a couple of projects, this P40, and the Mossie, now the Ju87 is just about finished. Sometimes trying to return to a project is quite hard, as I need to discover again where I was and what problems I had to fix.

Hi Skylark. I sent it to Ray, but he's never done anything with it. When I was doing it, it was being done by piggybacks, something I try not to mess with these days. To revamp that model would take quite a bit of work, as everything would need to be rebuilt properly. That is not to say it could not be done.

Great progress on the P40 John, it looks really sweet, as Chompy said, looks really 'round' It'd be great if the P51 was to get updated (i.e.sans piggybacks) as, when I lost contact with eaw, I was in the process of a whole new look skin for p51's and was having some success, I think I'd enjoy completing that one, if it ever happens.

To clarify, the HR P-51 model set is about the best we have.
It does bother me that no one seems to remember all the work I did on this model. I suppose it's my own fault for not advertising my accomplishments.
The original HR P-51 has been completely fixed to remove all the R/S problems. True, it was done by the liberal application of piggybacks but the user wouldn't know the difference.
In addition, that model set, P-51B, P-51D, P-51G, P-51H, P-51X and A-36 is the only set that utilizes the 3 position flaps as well as the working divebrakes on the A-36 version.
It also has enhanced tires, a much improved canopy and other rounded off segments.
So quite honestly, I don't know what else could be done to it.
However, I'm not sure that Skylark is asking about this set as he has all of those models. He may be referring to the UHR model that has been on the back burner for a few years.

i HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE WINGS, BUT THEY ARE ALL FIXED NOW, AND THERE IS ONLY A BIT OF MAPPING TO FIX, AND A FEW MINOR 3DZ FIXES TO DO.

A couple of screen of the new P40. I've now added some of the damage panels I've built into the model.

Nice Job Mike, but one comment, if those wires are type 1 elements, then delete them from the distance models or they become far to big when rendered on-screen at a distance, after all, how far away do you think you could see a wire from ?....
cheers,
Pobs

Hi Pobs No, these are TRA elements, so they are not a problem in the didtance. They will just fade away.

Weathering, shading and highlighting will be the final step. This machine should end up looking as if it has spent some time operating in the desert.

John,
Heh, heh, I know what you mean.
It's amazing that some of those models even show up in game.
BTW, not to hijack you post but did you know that raising an R/S compliant 3dz even one click using the "universal" option in 3DZ studio can cause it to fail?
Happen to me with a simple building from the new TMOD set. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't experienced it myself.
Ok, back on subject.
It will be great to have this plane to replace the old one. That's the only model I ever saw that could kill frame rates just flying in formation with 3 other planes.
Maybe when you finish it I'll do a new "Q" model with the bubble canopy.

Just done a check, and I've used 1160 elements in this model, not counting piggybacks, which are mostly flipping elements, which change to show damage. I still have a few things to add, so the final total will be closer to 1200 elements per model. Interesting to note that this model has no effect on frame rates, even if you have 17 squads checked.

I have a dozen or so color images of AVG machines. So, a sample is easily done up. Keep in mind that these skins won't have an up to standard cockpit until the fall of this year. So, unless ya'll want a flyable skin it would have to have a very low-rez cockpit. And, I am ready to start a P-38H squadron.

At last! After 70 3dz's I have a good working middle distance model, which started life as an early version of an EAW PAW conversion, with a wire prop. All I have to do is add a new prop animation, and it will be done. Next job then is to fix the S.3dz.

Not that you'll ever see it, but here is the finished M model.
