Very pertinent question at the end...

"I wonder how long these things lasted before rebuild?"

They cannot have had a long service life, considering the poor lubricants in use at the time and the operational profile, I.E. going full chat at cold start up. Has to play hell on rings and cylinder walls.

Actually castor oil is a really good lubricant.

I imagine that tbo is pretty short on those old engines still.
