I'm constantly amazed at how a minority of people can make everything about them. These individuals had to know what they were getting into when they moved to Charlestown Navy Yard.

In light of their 'PLIGHT' and invitation of the Captain to their homes, I found this statement more than says enough. I have a feeling it will fall on deaf ears.

"How nice these wealthy fools want the captain of the ship to see things from their perspective. Now we need to take these layabouts down to Walter Reed Veterans Hospital to see things from the perspective of real men and women-the ones that put their lives at risk every day so that they can live in their condos"

I've been to the Constitution about a dozen times. It's a very unique boat with a storied past. I would absolutely love to sail on her while she's at full sail. The men who served on her were sometimes no more than 11 years old. They carried cannonballs up and down the steep stairwells to the canon level of the boat. The sleeping quarters was anything but luxurious.

Anyway, I just had to vent.

The ship’s spokesman, Petty Officer First Class Eric Brown, said halting the cannon fire - or even delaying it - would undermine a time-honored patriotic ritual that draws tourists from land and sea. “It’s as much a part of Boston as the Red Sox [team stats] and Cheers,” Brown said.

Other nearby residents agreed, including 52-year-old Elizabeth Ames, who lives in a luxury development called The Nautica.

“This is the heart of the city’s history,” Ames said. “If you don’t like it, don’t live here.”

notworthy That says it all.

Amen.

It reminds me of a bruhaha here in Tucson over the possibility that DMAFB may be a home for the F-35 JSF. Every, and I mean EVERY story in our local rag of a newspaper starts out by saying how noisy the new aircraft will be. And of course that feeds the anti-military loons who don't even want an AF base here. Contrast with the story that Luke AFB in Phoenix was in the bidding. Not a word in that story about noise. Just that the citizens of the area were supportive.

Lord, what have we become? A nation of whiners? If you buy a house next to a shooting range are you going to complain that there are gunshots? (Yes, this happened too)

What happened to checking out the neighbourhood first? Everybody is so self-absorbed that they focus on the house, the property and assume that this will exist in a vacuum.

It's the same here with the local airport in Bierset (Luik)... Riverains are complaining because of the noise made from the planes. But the airport was there long before those people, they knew it when they bought their house down there. And same with Spa-Francorchamps, they want it closed except for the Formula One and the 24 hours endurance, again because of the noise. Those stupid people, why don't anybody just tell them to go #%&*$# themselves?!

I suspect that part of the draw of the neighborhood was Old Ironsides herself.

My suggestion, bring in the USS Massachusettes down for a visit and let her rip off some 16 inch gunfire twice a day for about a week or two. Maybe give those losers some kind of perspective.

They should have named names in that article. Shame can be a powerful tool.

The cannons could be loaded with cannonballs instead of just powder charges, then they would really have something to complain about after a 24lb cannon ball puts a large hole in their wall. biggrin

Not to mention the number of local speedways that have been closed because of the same type of BS...There are still noise complaints about the Action Track in Terre Haute, IN and it's been there about 50 years. "The cars are noisy and they make dust..." No crap, it's a friggin dirt track you insipid moron. attack
