It's easy to lose a sense of scale. People walking over and digging surprised me a bit about the massiveness of the debacle

Yes indeed. Quite an auspicious first day.
That Klaus, what a cut up!

The shelves both probably have something near 50 thousand pounds of product on them. Much like the WTC collapse, one that mass is moving at all, the metal gets bent and collapse is inevitable. Its possible though that the shelves may not have been bolted to the floor.

Use stronger shelves, or at least have solid steel posts protecting the shelves at ground level would be a good start. But to be fair, that would ruin the fun.

I drive a Yale 12,000 lb rated forktruck at work and a lot of people don't realize the damage these things can and will do. Besides the business end the back counterweight is just as if not more deadly, a forktruck driver has to be constantly on his/her toes especially around co-workers, who for whatever dumb reason like to dart behind you even though your back up lights are on and the back-up horn is blasting away. If you would ever get caught between the counterweight and a wall or any immovable object it would squash you like a bug. Just last Friday I had a close call, was about to back up with a 3,000lb I beam on my forks in a very tight space, looked behind me, no one there and I started backing up slowly, so now my attention is on the I-beam. A co-worker meanwhile had come around a corner and decided he could get past me. Luckly I just caught a glimps of him in my mirrors, I slammed on the brakes (nearly lost the I-beam which was 15 ft in the air) and I just missed him by inches, another second or two and I would have caught him he would have been pinned between my counterweight and a machine that was behind me. The golden rule when driving a forktruck or any motorized equippment is the pedestrian has the right of way, but personally whenever I'm around a forktruck I let them have a wide berth. I could never fiqure out why anyone would play chicken with a machine that weighs 100X more then you do. btw: funny video
