Given all the talk of gunnery accuracy, I reckoned it would be a good idea to have a better gunnery training method.

The proposal would be a white circle, something akin to an archery target, with a small red centre point and one or two concentric rings.

It would be approximately aircraft sized and would fly through the air at about 70 knots, height isn't crucial but different heights could be an option.

Two other disks could be set up travelling at the same speed but orientated for simulated attacks from above/below and from left/right.

Shooting at the target would leave black marks to indicate fall of shot.

In a corner of the screen would be an icon, much the same as with the simple gauges and with the same option to turn it off and on, this would show the target disk to show your hits in real time. Hits could then be cleared after each attack by the pressing of another key.

To add to the fun and competitive spirit scores could be kept and compared.

I think this would be better than simply practising shooting friendly/enemy aircraft because it would show where shots that didn't hit centre are going rather than just having shots missing or not having the desired effect and not knowing why.

It probably won't happen, unfortunately I'm not a mod maker, but I think it's a good option for discussion and maybe somebody, even NeoQB, might think it worth while and have the skill and time to implement it.

its a nice idea, but why not just put a plane in a mission, tell it to ignore being attacked and shoot at that?

Really the best practice to improve your aim is to practice gunnery in a dogfight. You need to be able to judge deflection because the chances are your target is going to be manuvering

Best training aid I've seen was the option added to Il-2, combined with the playback feature (soon to be included in RoF).

For those who aren't familiar with it, you could (can?) set a parameter to graphically record all hits on aircraft. The hits then show up as 3D-arrows through the airframes, depicting where and in what direction the bullets hit.

Absolutely brilliant, and I'd love to see something similar in RoF.

You guys haven't seen that drone mod? It's terrific. It's exactly what you're talking about.
Planes just fly around in circles and just sit there as you shoot the Hell out of 'em!

While your ideas are interesting, I've found the best gunnery training in ROF is simply:

Beginner: Russian Roulette with unlimited ammo and invulnerability...
Normal: Russian Roulette with unlimited ammo...
Advanced: Russian Roulette with limited ammo...
Expert: Russian Roulette with 1/2 loadout of ammo...



*shrug*


what other purpose would RR be in ROF for?

The idea of a white circle is not to see where your shots are going so much as were they aren't.

Yes it's easy enough to attack a drone but like shooting ducks in a shooting gallery, hitting them knocks them over but by knowing where you hit the target it's possible to adjust your aim and hit the target more often and in a more precise way, given a little bit of practice.

Yeah, I know. No question that Russian Roulette is the best training tool we have!
The Drones are great, though, for getting the hang of where your bullets go, when you press the button. Like they used to use during WW2. A tow plane pulled a large target behind it, and students would make runs at it. Just gunnery practice, not really combat practice. I'd say that once you do the drones, and get the hang of using your guns, you move into the Russian Roulette scenario and actually use it in practice against somebody shooting back at you.
Those two combined, should be all the training you need.
