Hi all

Not sure my aging OEM copy of Nero 6.0 will run under 64bit Win7 Ultimate. Any free alternatives? Or should I just use the default function in W7 itself?

I'm not doing complicated stuff, just backup of digital pictures to DVD for use on the same system, maybe sometimes transporting files to different systems, archiving my game patches and stuff for each game on disk (relevant possible for the next hardware after this one).

Very nice, free and updated regularly.

Thanks. Simple drag and drop files into the program to write them, as Nero? It sounds quite powerful.

Drag/drop or browse, burn to device or image. Very easy to use.
It's not a dvd decrypter, it won't do that, just a utility.

Thanks for the details. Sounds like the perfect thing, offering more than Nero OEM even.

Practically the only thing Imgburn doesn't do is multisession disc burning, so you might want to either pick up some RW's or keep Nero OEM on call for that reason.

Outsch. Thanks for mentioning that, that is a huge problem. Since all my archive DVDs with pictures are put together as time goes on (and shoots happen), some not being full up to a year after the first pictures.

You know, for long term archiving like that, dvd's take up a lot of space. You could consider some SATA drives and a dock. Docks can be internal, in an optical drive slot, or a desktop dock. They're pretty nice to have. I wouldn't want to swap out several times a day, but for what you describe it might be just right.
Check this out:
Internal dock:

External dock, uses either USB (slow but portable) or eSATA to a card you install to transfer (very fast)

I've booted a pc off of both kinds as well with no other hard drive installed. Nice for quick swapping an OS too, but certainly for space saving storage, just keep the anti-static bag when you get the HD. Can't remember if they're hot swappable as a supplemental drive, but I want to say they were.
Cheap options, then pick up some HD's as you run across good deals. Perfect for a prolific photographer.

Imgburn is the best burning software out period! It was actually created by the guy that wrote and developed the technology.

It is fast and very very good.

Kryptonite (can I call you Kryp wink )I don't like long term storage on a mechanical device. It could be inactive for over a year, and there's no guarantee it will move after that time. I have an eSATA connector on my new system so I could always use a 1TB drive with eSATA for fast transfers, but optical media just sounds safer to me. Verbatim guarantees over 10 years storage life for a properly written disk. I might consider flash cards, but write once media is always cheaper than rewritable media.

It seems a lot of people asked the imgburn Autor to add multisession, which he said he might in March 2008, but since then nothing happened.

I might still have to try Nero 6.0 under W7.
