Talk about a kick in the teeth

I'd been having some stomach issues of late- where I could no longer eat normal sized meals and had started to lose weight. Been seeing doctors since early October for it.
Started with the local GI doc- CT scan, blood work, gastric emptying, endoscapy. All normal except for thickening of the stomach wall. Refers me to a doc in Boston- only 35 miles away, but worlds away in terms of care and capabilities.
I ended up with an EUS Endoscopy with biopsy- negative, but thickening of the stomach wall. Last week I had a laproscopic (surgical) biopsy from the outside of the stomach wall. They found something-Cancer.
I got the full pathology results yesterday. Bad news, as in literally lose your stomach kind of bad news. Chemo and a full gastrectomy in my very near future. Next week I'm off to Dana Farber to get more info and a second opinion along with where I'll go for care. It's a rare cancer type in the stomach (like .1% of all gastric cancers rare- really out there stuff). The good news is that there appears to be zero spread of the cancer and that we've caught it relatively early.
I'm rather attached to my stomach- and I only have one. You can live quite normally without one, but I never planned on finding out. Now I'm faced with it. My dad died of colon cancer, now here I go with treatment.

Holy crap dude. I wish you all the best. My father-in-law had cancer and had to endure Chemo etc, and it's not nice. I really do wish you all the best. if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

They found it early and they found it because you insisted on taking care of yourself. You did good. I hope you can run with this as good news in that sense.

That is really bad news, but good that it was found early. Good luck!

I'm at least glad they found it early and it has a low risk of spread. Wish it wasn't anything at all. Really wish you the best. Chemo can be very difficult, but it you can stay positive through it, that attitude will only help your recovery.
Not sure how many people are in your life for support, but SimHQ is a place with a lot of ears (or eyes in this case).

I'm 37 in December, with a 2 year old daughter. Today (Nov 6) is my 10th wedding anniversary. Legitimately the next 6-12 months will be really lousy, after that I should have a mostly normal life. However it's getting through the next year that will be a challenge. My dad died of colon cancer at 65- this may be linked, but that is something we need to keep looking into.
This cancer (Signet Cell carcinoma) is extremely rare in the stomach, and in somebody my age. It's much more typical of somebody after 50.

All the best for a quick recovery from me.
I know how hard such news can be as I was recently told that I could have brain cancer, luckily further diagnosis proved it was actually nothing.
Hang in there!

tcable, I work as an Operating Room nurse in my local hospital. Cancer is no longer a "disease of the elderly," we're getting patients as young as 35. What I can tell you is what I tell most, if not all patients who are to undergo surgery --- Better to lose part of yourself and live, than to keep everything and die.
I'm glad you found out about the cancer while it's in the early stages, and good to hear it isn't spreading. I know surgery is scary, but better get that thing out of you and be safe as soon as possible. The longer it is in you, the more likely it is to grow (and impede some other organ) or spread (unlikely, but better safe).
Good luck to you tcable. I'll be praying for you as well.

You'll be in our thoughts and prayers. Keep that positive outlook. My wife(40) was diagnosed this past April with an inoperable head/neck cancer. It was squamous cell carcinoma that started behind her throat and wrapped around her neck and pressed on her eardrum and was collapsing her juggler vein. They started her immediately with an aggressive regiment of chemo for 9 weeks then followed with 7 weeks of radiation. She was beaten down pretty good and eventually had to get a feeding tube in order to nourish herself. She was loosing 7lbs a week and was only 120lbs to start with. Her positive outlook and the thoughts and prayers and good vibes being sent by everyone we knew and didn't know I believe help pull her through. Last month they did a CT scan and said the cancer is gone. They said there is no sign of cancer ever being there.

Best of luck! You found it early, and modern medicine has advanced leaps and bounds with this stuff. A friend of my parents was saved from liver cancer where even the Chemo didn't bite, but at another hospital they introduced a different operating method and it worked great for him.
Please keep us updated, fingers crossed for you.

I had Cancer. That was nine years ago and I'm clean. I beat it, and you can too! I know it's rough, don't let it get to you. Everything looked awful at the time. And here I am with a a beautiful little girl who just turned three. And I'm flying again! Keep thinking about the future! You've got a good chance for recovery. You caught it early like we did. Good luck.
