My thinking is that if they found a way to also let the environment partake in atmospheric interaction, and not just the planes themselves, without killing performance, then that might also be the solution to the windsock problem. If I remember correctly, they said animated windsocks where a cpu killer so far, and I don't think it was because of the graphical animation of the windsock.
But it's pure speculation on my part...
And if not, I'll just shoot down my wingman before landing to judge wind direction by the smoke from his smoldering wreckage
