I'm afraid the widow maker is the Canon camera prob. I despise taking that SD gizmo out of the camera to plug into the computer. Finger oil contamination or just plain buggering up the socket puts shivers on me! I *can't* be alone on this, so WHEN Canon comes out with a W7 patch to solidly permit the use of the download cable I'll probably give W7 a whirl again.
Just thought I'd pass on my own experience here. I use a Minolta S414, which I bought around 5 years ago. Yes it's old, and 4 megapixel is off todays mark, but it's a fine camera that I really like using.
Well I've been using the same 64MB Compact Flash card in this camera since day one. The frame counter is over 5000 shots now, and the card only holds 28 photos max. So with some rough division, thats at minimum 178 times I've removed the card from the camera, and we can add that same number again for the times I put the card in the memory card reader. So 350 insert/remove cycles and no sign of trouble yet.
My brother uses SD format cards in his two Canon point and shoots, and his Pentax SLR. All his frame counters are double what my camera registers, and he's had no problems with wear. He even uses his SD cards part time for data transport drives, when needed.
So in general, this technology would appear to be rather robust.
